Add in an option to forbid new joining users from Friending/DM'ing users already on a server
This is an anti-spam/anti-phishing feature.
Please add an option within Server Settings / Safety Setup / DM and Spam Protection that can:
- Be toggled on or off.
- Forbids new joining and roleless users to a server from being able to Friend request and DM users already on the server.
- It can be overridden when the new joining user has a specified role applied (or, if left blank, any role).
With that stated, I have encountered numerous bot accounts on a server that I moderate where this scenario plays out:
- A spam bot account joins the server.
- The spam bot account waits for new users to join said server after it has joined.
- The spam bot account then (with a varying delay on a timer) attempts to do the following:
- Sends a friend request to the legitimate user to evade current filters.
- Sends a DM to the legitimate user, and depending on whether the user accepts the friend requests, it ends up as a DM or Inbox list DM.
- The spam bot then will go through its preconfigured spiel to lure the user into being scammed, phished, or otherwise defrauded.
So when this feature is toggled on, when the spam bot attempts to DM or Friend Request the remote party, two things will happen:
- The spam bot account is thrown an error message stating that it is not currently permitted to DM/Friend Request other users on the server.
- Under Signals within the Members panel, an additional reason under “Unusual Account Activity” would be added: “Has attempted to Friend Request X users within Y minutes on Z date/time” and/or “Has attempted to DM more than X users within Y minutes on Z date/time.”
This is a persistent issue with financial-based Discord servers, where bad actors intentionally lure traders and otherwise unknowing users into such schemes. Due to the pervasive nature of these spam bots, there is no reliable way to report these fake spammer accounts in a timely fashion. You can kick-ban these fake spam accounts constantly… and even more of these fake accounts just come back.
Having this additional feature in our moderation toolbox would reduce the significant spam issues that are currently being encountered.
