Can Discord add game-like customization in Nitro to personalize servers?
I have kind of have been wanting an excuse to get Nitro but none of the current features really sell it for me. The boosts addition is getting there, and it make me wonder... Can you guys would consider beefing up nitro and boosting by adding a few server mechanics?
Summary: I think Discord can take it's platform and nitro to another level by adding game-like "world building" sort of features into servers instead of just the usual variety of "personalization" (like emojis).
One such feature I think will be very interesting/helpful is a virtual "server" currency. I used to frequent a precursor to Discord called Gaia Online, and this forum community was very active in part due to the "quests" and aspect of making the game currency together while socializing.
Discord has basically everything that made Gaia one of the biggest early gaming communities--minus the game currency, marketplace and avatar system.
With a server "currency" (like gold) one could have fun and also trade with other members. Discorders already do this for artwork, music commissions ect because there's user bots for it, but they're limited in scope and an "average" user often forgets to use them based on the necessity/hassle of remembering the commands.
I think this should be an official feature built into discord. "Currency" could also be interchangeable with "reputation" points. "Rep points" within a community are a way to reward good users for being stand up members of a community-- something which Discord could be implementing to (corny)toss around some positivity. Rewards are important to give in an online community, because it's (corny) nurturing rather than punishment. Getting users to behave can be forcefully done with mod tools, or with keen social tact by the admins--but that can (ironically) create a very combative attitude in your community, and positive incentives are worth building on as well. A very good Admin can create such a thing, but Discord as the platform builder should consider making it easier for them to do so--for the benefit of all users! :)
Perhaps there can be creative choices for a server owner to set up the earning/distribution of the "in-game" currency (or reputation system)? The mechanic itself could give Discord a "flavor" apart from other platforms like Skype. Everybody knows rupees= Zelda for example.
There are many prior examples of game mechanics and balancing Discord could draw from, just integrating some cliche ones like (in-game currency) could be very intriguing.
Perhaps Discord could add "game-like" sub features in which the pretend currency could be used. These features should help stir up social activity. (Ice breaker stuff with a gamer twist?)
Dice rolls are an example. There are Dungeons and Dragons sort of RPG groups using discord as their base (and I think even D&D games have pretend money rofl).
Maybe there could be some kind of leveling system? There's a lot of "simple" things people are using bots for and it's kind of like a giant work around in some cases.
They don't work well if they require users to be a bot wizard in order to participate. The "magic" is one reason why the average user is drawn to such things in the first place.
If the currency is introduced along with like "achievements" or "quests" that perhaps the server owner can kind of set up--it would give them a really cool way to make events for their community which in turn make Discord special and unique.
One thing that brings communities together as an identity is to work together to achieve goals, and gamer culture especially thrives on this.
Thanks for your time! :)
