[Suggestion] Block Messages without Blocking User
There are times where we rage quit or get angry at friends over stupid things and just don't want to talk to them, admit it. Times like these, the block button comes in handy--but what if it's temporary? Currently, blocking removes the person from your friend's list as well. While it's understandable why, I feel that being able to block messages without blocking the user would be a good feature to have--services like Facebook Messages, Skype, and Google Hangouts already have it, so why not Discord?
It's something simple but guaranteed to make a lot of people--especially competitive gamers who get angry at games quick--very pleased, no doubt.

You can just mute them

@box this only works for DMs, not for server/guilds

Can mute servers as well

Muting servers is often not the answer, because they aren't the only one you're chatting with on that server. Muting the entire server just because some random dude sends messages you get annoyed by would be overkill.

This!!! There's some people that I absolutely DO NOT want to see messages from, but I also don't want to block them or mute the servers we share. If I could just mute specific people in the chat then I would be much happier!

I agree. The lack of this feature has caused a lot of problems for me.
There are often very toxic people online, and blocking them is the only real option that Discord offers for not having to read their messages, while still being able to read/chat with other users in the server.
The Problem
A huge oversight, in my opinion, is that the people who you blocked will instantly know that you blocked them if they try and "react" to something you post with an emote. Even if someone else reacts to your message, if the blocked user tries to click on it (to give a +1 to that reaction), there will be a shaking animation and it will fail to process their intent. They sometimes get confused by this, not understanding what it means, and will start posting in chat "Why can't I react to messages anymore?"
Eventually, they will figure it out, and will sometimes say really caustic things in chat as a direct result: "So-and-so blocked me, what a snowflake, I can't believe they're so sensitive that they can't handle seeing what someone says online", etc. This tends to have a social effect where their allies will group together with them and start acting negatively towards the person they perceive as the "snowflake".
Obviously, some people might say that it's "not worth worrying about what these people think", but the issue doesn't exist in a vacuum. Even if I ignore them all completely, they can -- and often will -- start trying to character-assassinate anyone that rubs them the wrong way. It means that I've had to avoid blocking many of these people altogether, and am forced to read through their messages so that it I don't end up targeted by cliques of abrasive jerks. This, in my opinion, is the opposite result that I would expect from having a feature that lets me ignore them.
The Solution
It would be very simply fixed by having separate functionality to "ignore" a user's messages, which would not prevent them from reacting to our posts with emotes. This protects our privacy in terms of who we do or don't want to actually pay attention to in a server, without alerting to them that we think they're too negative to want to listen to.

late, but I agree with protato! there are some folks who just talk too much and I rather have them muted so I can see the replies of others. I dont want to block them, but quite frankly I don't even hate them. Please consider a mute/ignore option to make out life easier when sorting out.

I also agree! And it's not only because of toxic people, but It's also because of other reasons that I have. Here are the following
Firstly, being mildly annoyed at a friend.I find it so damn hard to ignore what a close friend says when they've angered me. I don't wanna ruin everyone's vibe with this person just because I specifically hate their guts. I tried ignoring this person but I end up replying with witty comments whenever I see the possibility to spit at them. It's a reflex, especially when I tend to get angry time to time.
Secondly, someone is having an inappropriate convodon't wanna mute an entire chat just because two or three people are talking about things I don't like. I may be very critical, but I don't want to bark at someone's interest just to satisfy my own dislike towards it. I'm not that kinda jerk. So if these three people are talking about stuff I don't like, then I'm only three clicks away from ignoring what they say. Plus, if I block them, they'll think it's personal. It's not.
Lastly, I wanna be ignored
I know this one's weird but hear me out. I hate it when drama leads to a blocking train. I'd rather let them think I'm tolerant of them than put me on their trigger lists. It's so easy these days to start a block train just because I said something off. Worst part? I can't contact them again, even if i need something important. How am I supposed to contact these people? Happened to me once, not a fan with all the stress this person gave me after blocking all of the friend group. Especially when we had a project together. I'd be nice if they just click a button to make sure things are temporary.
You have no idea how much I want this. I hope discord thinks about this option. Not much of us need it but since I'm typing this much, it should be obvious how much I want this feature. It'll definitely help a lot of spite problems that grows into hatred between friends. That's enough of me ranting to a help board. Good day.

Does this exist by now either officially or using a plugin. There's some people that I would like to shadow block them. Like they don't know that I can't see them

Very late on this, but I would also really like a feature where I can mute an individual user without having to block them or mute an entire channel or server.
