AV1 video codec support for uploaded files
It allows high quality video to have a lot smaller size. Right now users have to download the AV1 encoded video and play it in VLC or similar...

Electron supports AV1. Discord just needs to enable embedding. Tested it by replacing video src in HTML with an AV1 video and it played fine.

I agree

WHERE IS ANY PROGRESS ON THIS???

All major players are in the AOM so support can only improve from here. When using the 8 MiB upload limit, a lot more quality can be retained with AV1 compared to H.264 with less banding.

While I'm certain AV1 support will come at some point, I hope the adoption can be further expedited.

AV1 is already supported in every major browser and media player, all Discord has to do is append AV1 to the list of allowed codecs.

Been waiting 2 years for this.
I would use discord twice as much if av1 support was added.0 -
Discord should at least be able to embed AV1 video from websites using og or twitter embed metadata but for some reason at the end of the request the app has `?format=jpeg` which obviously breaks the requst.
The version of chromium discord is built with (Chrome/91.0.4472.164 Electron/13.6.6) has AV1 support already.

It already can if you specify an image tag for the thumbnail, because Discord can't generate a thumbnail itself.
Here's an excample: https://h.zipdox.net/renton/
But embedding external content defeats the purpose of AV1 since you aren't constrained by file size.

The next generation of desktop video cards is coming with AV1 encoding support. Intel Arc has it, AMD should have it according to bits prefixed DBR_SUVD_CGC_GATE2__SRE_AV1_ENC_ in the Linux source and NVIDIA, well, when was the last time they did not have something that AMD and Intel have?
Lack of AV1 hardware encoding and webRTC support was fielded as the reason for Discord not to enable AV1 yet. Chrome 90 added the webRTC part as far as I understand it and now the encoding hardware has arrived. Let's go! :-)

The fact that it already supports it with the right header tags means it should be trivial for Discord to add this. Why hasn't it been added?

I suspect it's because it would allow you to bypass paying for Nitro. AV1 allows for much smaller video file sizes while still looking decent while not exceeding the maximum file size limit of non-Nitro users.

If true that's terrible, I have nitro and not being able to upload AV1 files (reducing both discords storage requirements and my upload time) annoys me to no end.
Discord, get on it.0
