Age verification should be handled by discord itself, not individual servers.
Discord should implement age verification that is carried out strictly through and by Discord itself, it should not be left up to individual server owners and moderators to demand ID from other discord users. As it stands, servers that demand ID for entry/full access are exposing discord users to potentially being doxed, no matter how well you think you "Censored" your ID.
Discords own TOS specifically states that this activity SHOULD be a violation, it's simply not enforced.
Under the discord TOS section "RULES OF CONDUCT AND USAGE" there is a bullet point that reads as follows in regards to prohibited actions.
"attempt to obtain passwords or other private information from other members;"
Note the "Or other private information from other members" for some reason, your government ID isn't classified as personal information, nor is the photo attached to it and the birth date most servers minimally require you to leave uncensored.
Further more, "doxxing" on discord is not a fringe problem, and it takes little effort to find numerous cases of Discord users being doxxed through various means. Doxxing is not rare, and the people who have an interest in this type of behavior will find a way to abuse any method at their disposal to obtain your personal information.
Personally, I have been doxxed myself through a NSFW discord server that required ID. The only information that was left open was my photo and my DOB. Everything else was censored. A group of moderators from this particular server in question were able to find me by comparing the background of my states driver license to figure out what state I lived in, from there they went city by city for roughly a month until they found someone that looked like me within my age range.
Had I lived in a much larger city/state, perhaps that would have been impossible. Either way, there is no method to combat this type of behavior, if you were to completely censor absolutely everything on the ID down the the last pixel of background then there's no way to even verify anymore that the person is in fact showing you an ID. It could be cardboard for all you'd know at that point. Giving any personal information about yourself online to strangers is dangerous, exposing your ID to them is outright insane, no matter how much you think they can be trusted.
On top of this, requesting ID through images alone is ineffective to the point of uselessness when done by individual discord server owners. Without being able to physically hold the ID in your hand, the average person will not be able to distinguish a fraudulent ID from a real one, even more so when you're going to be dealing with ID's from all over the world with various designs and standards in regards to their manufacturing. If you think you can spot a fake ID just by looking at it on a computer screen, you're wrong. It's not up for debate, and you're more than welcome to message me on discord if you'd like me to prove it beyond all reasonable doubt by having you "spot the fake" out of the ID's I've created.
Don't worry, I'll also put my screen name or a server name or whatever words you want in the image too. Just to show you how painfully easy it is to bypass server owner mandated age verification.
Discord should implement a system on their side to offer age verification, and servers should be able to restrict who can join their servers based on the age verification. For example if someone owns a server and only wants people who are verified 18+ to join, there should be a setting to enable only accounts who've verified their age to join.
On top of this, all discord server owners and members should be prohibited from requesting ID from other members themselves, and attempting to obtain the ID of another user should this system be implemented should be a bannable offense.
It is discords responsibility to verify the age of it's members. Not individual server operators.

I think your confused about asking for personal information and verifying someone's Age. IF A SERVEE asks you to send id with out personal info blocked out , that's against tos. However if someone asks you to prove your age and doesn't require you to show all your info I believe that's fine. You aren't required to join that server anyways. You don't have to share you name face or text . Just don't join. In an NSFW it's important that not only people are able to be held accountable. But also to make sure they aren't minors. Bottom line if you're not comfortable sharing dont

Ex I'm not sure why you think any part of a government issue ID falls under "public domain" but frankly the entirety of that ID, photo and birth date included constitutes "private information" to pretty much every reasonable person.
"In an NSFW it's important that not only people are able to be held accountable"
You are not law enforcement, you are not an employee of discord and I find it difficult to believe you're capable of holding anyone accountable for anything.
"It's for the children" has always been a terrible argument for anything. You aren't preventing minors from accessing NSFW content, you're just annoying grown adults who know better than to share their personal information online with random strangers that happen to be administrators in a discord server, for which the qualifications are non-existent. People with common sense understand that the sheer volume of web domains that you can retrieve adult content from means requiring ID on a single platform does nothing but irritate so you can pat yourself on the back and pretend you've done a good job, while accomplishing nothing. Anyone anywhere with a computer and internet can moderate a discord.
Regardless, discord mods aren't qualified to determine what is and isn't a real ID in the first place and I already proposed an alternative method of age verification that's handled by Discord itself, rather than random nobodies who quite literally can't be held accountable for any abuse of the information they're scraping for. The fact that you have a problem with discord handling age verification for their own platform means you simply enjoy having the private information of other people in your hands. Information you have no right to.2 -
Svipe Verification Bot can solve this problem. You can verify age of members of your server without them sharing photos of documents. https://www.svipe.com/discord-bot

I have read your article and I 100% agree with you and also wrote my own article about this. I live in the EU and it is 100% illegal what they are doing. And bots are not a solution! Bots are written again, by anonymous people or they can be hacked. The only legal (not to mention moral and secure) way of collecting personal data should be done by Discord itself!

I appreciate your passion and research . However I must inform you that you must be misunderstanding the situation. 1 if what you said was true , than bouncers, bartenders , clerks or anyone tat requests ID is breaking the law. Which as we both now isn't. 2 its a persons choice to submit their id for verification. They aren't forced to. Just like going to a club , you have a choice, show id or don't come in, easy. 3 We ask people to block any personal information except date if birth. After the photos are erased and removed. So no fear of hacking since the media doesn't exist. 4 Discord doesn't do an age verification that can't be beaten by a 13 year old. Our priority is safety for our members. We have staff that is trained to identify ids from all around the world by people who do that for a living . We've done our research put in the work . We ensure member are safe and that their information is protected. Again we ask them to block out any info that identifies them . Also to repeat , just like a bar checks ID , organizations have the right to check someone's age. Because its not discord that gets in trouble for having minors on, its the server . In conclusion its up to each person to decide if they want to show the bouncer their ID or not.
