Yeah I really hope they revert this, I hope they just messed it up and it wasn't intentional..

Agreed, I'm also having this issue in Firefox, and can't see a browser option to force it through.

To a browser user, this seems like adding insult to the injury that was disabling context menus by default (luckily that can be overridden by a browser setting).

The browser event paradigm exists for a reason, and users like me choose to use the browser solution for a reason.  Please refrain from ignoring it - or at least offer a viable alternative to the workflows you're imposing upon.

I would be more than willing to perform keybind setup, or tinker with my settings, if it would allow me to preserve or improve my workflow throughout updates.  But I'm guessing that would require more resources on your end than simply reverting this change.

UPDATE: Middle-click now seems to be working correctly in Firefox, as of 2022-02-25 16:19UTC.  Hopefully that's the fix we needed - thanks for listening!

Middle-click to "open original" was perfectly good UX. Now you have to use right click and "open link", but that's not consistent as GIFs (such as from tenor or imgur) cannot be opened that way.

If it's possible to rename this issue to be specifically about the middle-click, I think that would be helpful for visibility.
