Single Discussion Thread - Multi-channel View and Post
Hello,
I think the Discord Servers, categories, and channels are awesome for organizing conversations into relevant interests and discussions.
Problem:
Unfortunately, at the same time, I feel it can create silos of parallel comments, discussions, and threads that are relevant to more than one channel or involve multiple stakeholders or audiences.
For example, in a medium to large organization, it might make sense to have channels for individual teams or departments (e.g. engineering, customer support, product) to keep in sync, etc. However, sometimes there might be a specific or unique discussion that won't neatly fit into any one particular category or channel but would require a cross-function team to be involved in. Note, this problem would also be true for large public servers where an interesting thread is posted in one channel but would be highly relevant to another.
While it is possible that some of the intended audience might be involved in one of the channels posted, this might not always be the case. Not everyone wants to be involved in or see every channel on a server - especially very larger servers with diverse channel topics, etc. In such cases, to properly reach all intended audiences this would usually require the author to either 1) repost into multiple channels - which can split the conversation or thread or 2) require them to create special private group chats in which they would have to know all the attendees in advance. Neither option seems feasible to large organizations or public servers whom many people might not directly know each other.
Potential Solution:
When a comment is posted in one channel but might be relevant to another, allow the original author or channel moderator to be able to dynamically assign or tag the comment or thread to multiple channels to which they have access. This would create a single centralized discussion or thread but can be viewed in multiple channels for those that might find the discussion relevant.
Once the comment or thread is posted, other users can see and contribute to the discussion from whichever channel it is posted on that they have access to. Likewise, when a comment is seen in one channel it would automatically be seen by the same user in any other channel that the user is already in and that the thread was already posted to.
Thanks,
Tairi
