New Username System and Why It Should Not Exist
It isn’t too late for Discord to roll back the changes to the username system, and here is why:
1. The new system will create a black market of usernames, such as short ones (@deez) or generally popular usernames such as @starwars. This will lead to hacking, blackmailing, scamming, account trading and more by malicious people in order to obtain these usernames.
2. You say right now it’s difficult for users to remember their own usernames – how difficult is it to remember john#9821 as opposed to @jo__h____n? Much less to say it in a real conversation, as per an example your article provided. And when you say most people don’t know their discriminator, did you directly ask what a discriminator is or did you elaborate that it means the 4 numbers after the hashtag in your username?
3. Discriminator change is one of the major features of Discord Nitro. By converting to pomelo usernames and therefore removing this feature, you are pushing thousands of people away from one of the biggest sources of your income.
4. With the flexibility of usernames using discriminators, it was a lot easier to come up with usernames as long as they had less than 9999 people using it. This change will make it more difficult to come up with a username that is easy to remember.
5. Rolling out these changes in batches while prioritizing older Discord members ensures that some people will not be able to claim a username they want just because they made their account later. It is not fair to the members who registered their accounts later.
5. The discriminator username system was one of the things that made Discord unique and easy to use. Please, listen to your community just this once and revert the change because frankly, no one asked for it and going forward it will only make the issues with Discord (such as account hacking and scams) worse. Nobody wants this change, and the reasoning behind it is flawed.
