Discriminators are a great idea. Removing them is just shooting yourself in the foot.
Pros and Cons of discriminators:
* PROS
* wow I can have any username I want and I don't need to worry about anyone else having the same username because the discriminator ensures it's unique without resorting to looking xXx_5tup1d_xXx because someone else had the same idea!
* No need to worry about username squatting/poaching/selling
* Freedom to change your username however you want, without needing to worry about whether or not you'll be allowed to change it back later.
* Much easier for new users to get started (as they won't have to waste time trying to find a unique permutation of their username)
* CONS OF DISCRIMINATORS
* 'oh no I have to enter a hashtag and a 4-digit number as well waaaaaaa😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭'
Pros and Cons of removing discriminators:
* PROS:
* 'yay I no longer have to perform the stupidly monumental task of entering a hashtag and a 4-digit number at the end of everyone's newly contrived mangled af usernames (that are now mangled because of the new requirement to be unique)'
* Excellent business opportunities for those seeking to make a quick buck by squatting on a desired username and then effectively taking it hostage
* CONS:
* Much less flexibility with usernames.
* Means that users are forced into mandatory xXx_un1qu3_xXx usernames (ugly af)
* Barrier to entry for new/casual users (having to find a contrived unique username)
* Constant fear of username poaching
* Discouraged from ever changing your username for any reason.
* Impersonation from username squatters - in turn likely to lead to complicated legal issues for you.
* 🤮

Agreed on everything but the "discouraged from changing your username" point. Sounds like the display name has nothing to do with the username, so unless you're going for a drastic change (i.e. rebranding), no reason to change the tag, only the display.
Other than that, though, yeah, no, you're spot-on. This change is terrible, and whoever suggested it and greenlit it should be reprimanded at best.3
