New Username Feedback
Hello, reader. My name is Azzy, and, like many others, i'm here to air my grievances with the incoming username system. There will be some use of profanity and i apologize.
As somebody who, very vaguely, understands the pressure you guys are under to fix the problem that you believe must be looming, i don't say this lightly. You guys are committed to fixing a perceived problem and i can't fault you all for that.
But, as a user who has many friends that agree with the views i'm putting out here, i can't agree with the route you've taken. I feel you will estrange more users than you will endear them, myself and several friends included. I will personally confess i'd rather give these random people on the internet my *phone number* to chat with me than use this site with this change implemented, if that were an option.
As a non-paying, non-influential user, i'm sure my words carry zero weight with you, but i also say this as somebody who would have been a subscriber upon gaining the ability to control my own money next year, had this change not been brought to the light of day: you will lose money. You will lose subscribers, both current and potential. Discord, as it is right now, has very little major income outside of your nitro subscribers. This is not the kind of result that you want, and many people know it. Sure, you have enough die-hard users that maybe it'll be worth the risk, but is that one you really want to take?
Also, speaking of money, how much money do you think people will make off of selling these one-use unique usernames to people? How many keysmashes will become usernames? How many people will use their REAL NAMES when they run out of options outside of keysmashes?
You used the point of people not knowing what a Discriminator is called. I think that's, honestly, a fucking ridiculous idea. We know what the numbers ARE, unless we are 2 minutes into our Discord journey. Since when have we ever needed to know what they were CALLED? Perhaps if that were sooo important you should have written down, say, a list of discord-feature-based terms, onsite and easily accessible!
You also used the point of "almost half of friend requests not going through due to xyz" and i think that's ridiculous too. That's user error, and yes it is sometimes sad if you have no other opportunity to speak to the one you wanted to friend offsite to ask again if you forgot or need clarification. But it is, in my opinion, a terrible reason to make such drastic changes to your naming system, when everything else goes through just fine- not to mention people like me that have to re-send our requests because we typed it wrong the first time by like. a letter or two.
I, and many of my friends, think keeping the existing system that has been used for longer than i even know is the best route, perusing the likely countless solutions you have received in these feedback posts is also a good option. Perhaps actually *speaking* to your community about changes before you go about changing things for the worst- and trust me, most people do think it is changing for the worst- is the best option of all. You probably aren't even hearing the half of the negative opinions on this.
Have a nice day, feedback reader, and i hope your beverage or snack of choice brings you immense joy in these dark times. Because judging by a lot of the fuss over this issue i've seen on other sites? You're probably needing it right now.
