A Potential Solution to BetterDiscord
BetterDiscord is basically a version of Discord that basically adds the ability to add plugins and themes to Discord. However, considering that it is a modified client of Discord, it is actually against Discord's Terms of Service to use it due to security issues regarding modified clients. This statement was confirmed on Discord's Twitter in 2017 when a user asked about using BetterDiscord. Since the features of BetterDiscord are wanted by so many users, I have come up with a solution to allow the use of BetterDiscord without making the devs do a whole lot, because they clearly don't want to do a whole lot.
First of all, there is a feature included in BetterDiscord that allows you to make custom CSS code for the program to use. While it does seem like a good idea for BetterDiscord developers and others who create content for it, there is potential that it could be used to do harm to others. Simply removing that feature could solve many of the issues surrounding it.
There are definitely many modifications that have been made to Discord by third-party developers, some for good, and others for malicious intents. Having an extensions feature in Discord could bring BetterDiscord and other awesome modified clients into the system, especially since they are wanted by so many Discord users. Anyone should be able to submit their own extensions, but there needs to be a review process for every single submission. People can send their extensions to an email operated by Discord that is similar to the support email, but the email will be specifically for third-party developers submitting features to add. Upon submitting a plugin, a Discord team member will then take a look at it and inspect the submission to see if it has any malicious features. If the plugin is deemed safe, it can be added to the available extensions, which can be downloaded from the Discord application itself. However, any updates to extensions must be reviewed, as to ensure that the update doesn't bring any malicious features. Extensions will be free to download and use, and the creator/creators of them will be credited. If an extension is verified, there needs to be a document between Discord and the extension developers saying that Discord has all rights to take down the plugin if the developers behave in ways that violate Discord's TOS/Community Guidelines, and can take it down if there are several complaints attributed to the extension.
Since extensions are very hard to develop, there should be a special badge given to the developers of those extensions, just like the badges given to verified bot developers.
Hopefully this gives insight to the Discord devs so that the people can get what they want without them having to do a whole lot.

I love this idea! It would be a really cool to see community created content added. It would be cool to see similar communities and tools be build around these similar to what's happened with Discord bots.

I would love to see this in action. If this is implemented by discord, I would like to try my hands at building an extension.
With the motivation of the badge, hopefully tons of amazing extensions will be developed by the community
