Username Change (Pomelo) - losing what made Discord freeing, unique, and recognizeable.
One of the greatest things about Discord out the gate, when I was a new member just creating my account, was the relative creativity offered by the discriminator system. Any name I wanted, right there! With some numbers of course, no troubles there.
In fact, we see "confusing" numbers pretty much everywhere. Like in phone numbers. Like in new usernames created in the effort to have more "unique" names. Well, given my name was Maven#9030, there was no shot at getting Maven when the option opened to me. I had resigned to that as soon as the announcement was made. I might as well just be... @maven9030. Since the name change was recommending me adding numbers to my name anyway.
So... what's this solving, exactly? The hashtag? The thing that anyone could look and go, ah! That's a Discord username! I can find this person on Discord! Was this really anything that needed to change? Now we're... just like everyone else, pretty much. And no better than we were before. Discord used to feel freeing and special, but by the hour it just gets more and more corporate... in spite of the quirky language used throughout the client and webpages suggesting otherwise.
Many others feel the same, obviously indicated by the backlash. It's not too late to turn back. Acknowledge your fans, your community, your loyal customers of the last 8 years.
