The Rollout of Pomelo Usernames has been a massive Failure: How to Cancel Nitro in Protest
We have been lied to, and I've had enough.
As stated by Stanislav Vishnevskiy in the official blog post 'Evolving Usernames on Discord,' "We will be assigning priority to choose your new username based on when you registered for Discord, Nitro status, and ownership of partner and verified servers."
The rollout of this system, known as the Pomelo username system, will remove our Discriminators (the #0000) from our usernames, making them less unique and even more complicated, as we've already seen since its rollout began.
I joined Discord on June 01, 2018. I had been gifted Nitro by friends occasionally, but I didn't purchase Nitro for myself until late 2022-2023. I had my username changed today (June 08, 2023), and my friends who have had Discord since 2016 and Nitro before 2023/way longer than me have YET to receive an email about their usernames nor a popup when they log on to Discord.
So there's one colossal lie right off the bat.
I should have done this earlier, but please cancel your Nitro subscriptions. It will suck to lose all of these wonderful perks, but Discord has made it clear by their actions (or lack thereof) that they don't need our support if they care so little about what the user base thinks. Numerous arguments against Pomelo have been spreading faster than the smoke pollutants from Canada's wildfires, and there's even multiple Change.org petitions. It's an utter failure, and it doesn't seem like Discord will listen unless we empty their wallets, even if just by a tiny margin; we need to try.
Discord has failed to explain the Discriminators (#0000) to users; they posted this announcement with the release of the Discord birthday so they could hide it a bit better from the userbase (of that, I do not doubt it, even if it's not been confirmed), and not even a MAJORITY of the userbase has had issues with the current (old) username system with the #0000. As quoted in the article, "More than 40% of you either don’t remember your discriminator or don’t even know what a discriminator is. That’s a big problem when discriminators are required to add a new friend."
It's a 4-digit number. People will grab their Switch Codes and post them in channels for people to add them, for goodness sake, so if people could do that, how hard is it to go to your profile, click on the name and have it automatically copied, and paste it? I have had ZERO issues friending people in the past. It's so easy to friend people. We are not incompetent. A missing discriminator or misspelled name in the database? That's a pathetic excuse, in my opinion.
Please go to your Discord settings and CANCEL your Nitro subscription. It sucks and might not do anything because it may be too late, but the only chance we have of reverting this ridiculous change is doing this.
How to Cancel Nitro
Go to Settings, under Billing Settings, click Subscriptions, and click Cancel on your current subscription. When they ask you for feedback on WHY you're canceling, click the Other option and explain that you are against the Pomelo username system (removal of discriminators).
What will Pomelo username changes restrict?
Let's look at this long list of username restrictions, shall we?
- Usernames are case insensitive and forced lowercase
- Usernames cannot use any other special characters besides underscore ( _ ) and period ( . )
- Usernames cannot use 2 consecutive period characters ( . )
- Usernames are unique to each user, and no two users can share the same username.
Pomelo Allows...
- Latin characters (a-z) THIS MEANS NON-LATIN CHARACTERS ARE ACCEPTED.
- Numbers (0-9)
- Underscore (_) and period (.) as special characters
Do you see the difference between the lists?
I can't wait until we have a bunch of tommy123, tommy_123, tommyxxx, xtxoxmxmxy, and all that other chaos because people can't have the names they want.
Check out these Other issues causes by the change...

They rolled it out anyway, even with posts getting thousants of upvotes. I got a prompt today to change it. What a bunch of ******

Great post. Removing the discriminators alone shrunk the available username pool by a factor of 9999, and VASTLY more when considering that capital letters and non-Latin characters are now forbidden too. Great job Discord, you really made names more unique by stripping your userbase's ability to choose whatever name they please.

Topo Thank you for your comment. Seriously feels like the app has gone downhill, and they're hiding it behind all of these pretty updates and the Discord birthday. The non-Latin characters not being permitted also feels very...wrong? I don't want to say racist, but I'm tempted to say racist.

SilentSpace I can't wait until someone ends up being SWATTED for their username because someone took it, and now they can look them up quickly to get that done. It happened with a Twitter handle and the poor man had a heart attack and died after the incident. I feel like our Discriminators protected us in a way. It made it harder for people to find us if we didn't want them to find us.

I am against the new username system. Discord will not get another penny from me until the old system is reverted. The reasons Discord has provided to change to Pomelo are insufficient, and I would much rather use other competing platforms, such as Guilded, than be belittled and demeaned by a company whose core product can easily be replaced by a competitor. The discriminators were not that hard. They werent in anyway confusing, except maybe to the blatantly disconnected and out of touch CEO of Discord, or those senile lawmakers who don't understand the internet or even what a computer is.
"Oh, people couldnt make their username Mike because all 10000 discriminators were taken up" has been proven to be a lie as someone was able to make a user account with the name Mike earlier this month so the pool isn't exhausted like Discord claims, and even if that were the case.... the Pomelo system makes the issue far worse because it is now limited to only one person being able to claim the "Mike" username before it is exhausted. Want to deal with the username exhaustion problem? Maybe make discriminators up to 5 digits long. That would be a better route than this horrible release. On top of that, usernames are extremely limited under the new system. This change is largely unpopular with the majority of its userbase, but Discord seems to think it knows the desires of its userbase better than its users. Therefore, I am cancelling my Nitro.
WhiffleWaffles it does come kinda comes across that way. Although, I know that there are instances where people use usernames with nonstandard characters in them such as (emojis, etc.) that can make it somewhat difficult to add them, but theres a better way to resolve this.Implementing a friend code system.
Topo it's at least a factor of 100 million... and thats still under low balling it.
I know Reddit is staging a massive blackout in protest of the changes going on over there... but what if we staged a large blackout where no one touched Discord for a couple of days on top of cancelling our Nitros? Surely with a massive dip in their userbase, Discord will be left hurting and want to change their stupid decision. They surely have realized how unpopular this "innovative change" is but they're being stubborn and digging their heels into the ground. Well two can play at this game.2
