Feature Wish (not request, this is ridiculous)
I have no illusions that Discord could be reworked to include this as it feels like it would require a fundamental reworking of the pipeline? But I had an idea that would make my experience of social networking direct messages apps much, much, much, much friendlier and healthier for my brain and I just have to get my concept out into the world.
A second form of 'delete', called 'nevermind'
and, instead of individual posts, i would be able to drag-select entire groups of posts at once and 'nevermind' them all into one pile.
when 'nevermind'd like this, it would hide all the posts under essentially the equivalent to a spoiler tag on classic forums.
at first, you may be tempted to think about this purely from a design perspective and rule it out as redundant and difficult and confusing, but please hear me out for why this would actually benefit my life personally as it would make communicating with other humans less stressful and toxic in a genuine way?
When I'm DMing my friends and lovers, I often go stream of consciousness. As such, my posts may start with ideas I've had, but by the last post I might have completely rejected that idea. It's important in my life to communicate with honestity and truth to my mind's processes and my heart's chaotic nature, so I don't want to just delete my posts or edit them as it would disrupt the journal-like truth of my messaging style.
However, I also know that the way humans react to communication is unpredictable and stressful and tensions run high with anxieties and whatnot. It strikes me as somewhat unhealthy to subject my close friends to potentially stressful ideas that I literally later in my DM I already ruled completely out by just thinking about it. Maybe my anxiety-prone friend will stop reading my DM midway thru and never get the relief that the problem was solved.
And thus, the 'nevermind' grouping. It preserves all of my thoughts as I had them so that the truth of my being can be communicated to my closest allies, and it allows me to relieve tension in people who may be reading by assuring them immediately that my scary ideas already have potential solutions.
To better help this relief, I'd also like the 'nevermind' group to have a place under it where I can leave a message of explicit clarification for why I 'neverminded' it, so that people can have context for whether or not they want to open the box and check.
You don't have to believe in cognito hazards to understand triggers.
This sort of feature would improve the mental health of people like me, which would be a net benefit to all of society.
Well, discord will never have this feature, but I'm young. Maybe before I grow old and wither away someone else will make a social app that we can use that helps us be true to ourselves and protective of others, but until then, I'll just have to be satisfied with makeshift solutions.
Thanks for reading.
