Another Way To Go About Username Discriminators
Removing the 4-digit username numbers is not the way to go.
What if a celebrity or content creator is unable to get their original username back? There was a reason why those discriminators were important.
On your own username screen, you suggest adding numbers to make usernames more distinct. You already had that, removed it, and now are asking users to put those numbers in their actual username.
Perhaps a better way to go about this is to give each and every user their own unique 4 or 5 (or longer) digit number. That way, no matter what they change their username to, whenever they share their user, they only need to share that 4-5-6 however long digit.

It's probably useless to invent anything here. Discord lost a piece of his identity. And in such a stupid way. I know a lot of people who didn't mind the hash with the number and were happy that they could have the same username both for themselves internally and externally.
Everyone immediately knew that if there was a hash, it was discord...
But now? They had to change their name, but it's taken, so they still wrote the number they had there before.
just without the hash, and it looks pretty silly.
or have the same display name and username... and is pointles to had display name....5 -
Discord has no intention of listening to user suggestions, that much is clear. There were so many better ways to go about this whole change that other people suggested, and Discord staff ignored all of it and rolled out the system anyway. I hate the new system. I don’t like the @/username system on every other site that uses it because I believe usernames shouldn’t be exclusive to one user in this day and age. The internet is far too populated now to make that system viable, and their solution of adding numbers, periods, and underscores just makes the usernames ugly.
The hashtag system with the discriminators was so much better, and the reasons they gave for changing it were shallow at best.

Relying solely on a unique number is not practical - even 5 digits only gives you 99999 possible accounts, which Discord is already far, far past. Internally, Discord accounts are actually referred to by a unique number (you can find this through developer mode/the API) and it is very long. It's not suitable for humans to use for everyday stuff.
The previous discriminator system was good because for uniqueness, it relies mostly on a memorable string (the username) and the random set of numbers can therefore be relatively short. That makes it easier to remember and communicate for a human.

Don’t forget, though, that every capitalization counted as a new username with the old system. Going by their own blog post, adding another 0 to the discriminator would allow 99,999 “Mikes”, 99,999 “mikes”, 99,999 “MIKES”, etc. That’s already nearly 300,000 people who can share the same username, as opposed to the nearly 30,000 that could share it with a 4-digit discriminator. And that’s not including if a last initial was thrown in or the full name was used as a username. Most people don’t share their Discord account usernames by mouth, so the issues they’re stating in the blog are untrue. Even if you didn’t remember your digits, it takes one click to load up your user profile to see them, or one click to just copy it with their own built in username copy function.
Choosing to look like every other platform out there, though they say that was the point, was the wrong choice to make.

Yes, adding more digits to the discriminator would increase the number of potential usernames. That is practical and it would be a much better alternative to what Discord actually did - and it's an alternative I've suggested myself before.
But the OP wasn't proposing extending the discriminator to 5 digits. They were proposing using only a 5-digit number for friend connection. That is not at all practical.

What if the 4-5 digit ID code being proposed was a combination of numbers and letters, though? Obviously, just using numbers alone, or a-z alone, would be relatively limited but if you mix both together, I feel like the system could go pretty far, no? So I kind of see where the OP is coming from with the suggestion, even if I do feel like the additional 0 on the Discriminator is the better choice.

I have no gripes with the 4 digit discriminator— I think that system was fine. Only reason I’m suggesting a unique 4-to-5 digit discriminator is because the main reason they removed the 4-digit discriminator is due to it not being viable for adding new people to your friends list (even if that was never really a problem lol).
I was saying/suggesting that if it was a unique discriminator, then there wouldn’t be an issue with having a unique username because all you would need to do is copy that unique set of numbers.
Also what Some Alias Here said, I would be totally open to having a 4-to-5 digit discriminator with letters and numbers! I just suggested numbers because it was the “original Discord way.”
But even so— The reality here is that Discord wants to fix the whole “difficulty sharing with other people” issue. I was just trying to suggest an alternative to both the original system and the new no non-unique username system. If you want them to go back to the og system, just keep sending feedback and keep cancelling your nitros. Thanks for your time 👍
Also drink a glass of water every time I say “discriminator” and “suggested” lol.
