Discord new username idea (we could do this to at least calm some of the members down)
I know the change is nearly getting made but what could discord do to calm the haters of the new username down is that add a switch so anyone who isnt good with their username they could go back to User#0000 or they could go User.user or another one idea is that to let the new usernames have special characters because one of the good things about the old username was that we could add special characters which we only have on Display names now but at the end i just wanted to give an idea and it might calm some of the members down about this new username

I understand your feedback, although there are many negatives about this:
- They changed the name so it’d be easier to friend people
- They don’t use special characters because you want to be able to ping users
It’s a great idea but would cause some confusion.

I understand what you mean, although it is about friending users and the special characters. Display names help because of the special characters, and so people get the name even if it has been claimed. And that is the reason why Pomelo is happening. So people don’t get scammed and a unique username, but can also get an epic display name too!

Ok that's a point and a positive point and ik safety on discord is their first priority but it would be good as a user experience to have this but in the end this is just an idea

But another thing is that WE cant have similar usernames thats what the most people are mad about other than the tag and stuff yea display name is good for changing it fast and stuff and ik its for safety and these kind of stuff that discord did this but not having similar names is one of the main reasons members are mad

The reasons quoted in the blog regarding the username change were non-issues, though. Discord users were not having a hard time sending friend requests, and while some people did abuse special characters for quirky, aesthetic usernames, a lot of non-English and non-American people used them because it's part of their culture. Furthermore, the Discriminator system with the hashtags was a far superior system because it eliminated the scarcity and exclusivity of usernames by allowing duplicates of usernames to exist with a different hashtag between 0001 - 9999.Display names are not the cure all for not getting the username you want because they're not the username. I can easily set my own Display Name, right now, to some famous name or some influential person online. That doesn't mean I'm them. Except now, we can't even trust that the person with that username is them either. For a lot of people, their specific username is their brand or association, and as we've seen already, people ARE being impersonated because Discord Partners and other verified people have already had their usernames stolen by people, even by Discord STAFF in some cases which is extremely poor ethic and conduct. In some cases, these people who intentionally took a well-known name are even attempting to extort the targets by selling them back their username for exorbitant amounts of cash or cryptocurrency. It's not a new issue by any means, because the old discriminators were also sold on username black markets, but the issue has now become worse due to a single username only being usable once.
The pomelo system is inefficient and many other companies are moving away from it; it's an outdated system that does not meet the needs of the online population, it's entirely Americentric and English-based, and it's creating far more problems than Discord previously had regarding impersonation. Furthermore, people are being spammed by friend requests trying to check if a specific username is available, and users with certain usernames are now the target of harassment because people want their username to sell for profit. Have you not seen the article about the man on Twitter who died of a heart attack back in 2020 after he was swatted by someone who wanted his username? Discord is now opening themselves up to this kind of problem which has real world and even legal consequences should things take a turn for the worse. Furthermore, people with trademarked or copyrighted brands that don't get their username can also pursue legal action against Discord based on impersonation and other issues that may arise from someone taking and abusing their name.
Nothing about this update is good, nothing about this update was WANTED by the community as evident by the massive backlash. This was an entirely backwards update from Discord that doesn't even solve the fake problems they fabricated to push the change to begin with, it just creates new, worse problems that didn't exist and are going to have even worse consequences down the line.

Yup that's my point,at least add a switch to bring tags back for users who dont want the new username OR bring back the tags for all of the users.
