Context menu hijacked on links in messages [End of June 2023]
(stable 207472 (945c7fa) Ubuntu 64-bit, Firefox 114.0.1)
Hi.
Today (2023-06-22), I started systematically getting the Discord custom context menu when right-clicking on links present in posted messages, instead of the web browser’s native one.
- This prevents me from using many useful options, such as “Bookmark link” (we often want to check, later, what people suggest us to look at), or “Open link in new private window”, or even some extension-specific things like ClearURLs’ “Copy clean link location” to get rid of annoying tracking query parameters in links.
- I don’t see the point of having the Discord custom menu there: if I want to do message-related things (such as react or copy the message’s link), I won’t right-click specifically on the link contained in the message.
My only workarounds right now are quite lame: either manually select precisely the text that the link is made of and then do the right click, or use “copy text” and manually do whatever I intended to do with the URL in the first place.
This is made even worse by the absence of hotkeys (or whatever they are called – the underlined letters) in Discord’s custom context menu. Typically, with Firefox’s native menu, I often simply hit B on my keyboard to trigger the “Bookmark link” item, or L for “Copy link”. The custom menu has no such thing as far as I can tell.

For now, I've found a reliable workaround. Even in places where Discord replaces the context menu, holding the Shift key on the keyboard while right-clicking opens Firefox's context menu instead. (Tested in Firefox 114.0.2 on Linux)

Experiencing the same in Google Chrome since 2023-06-22.
Sadly there seems to be no way in Chrome to force it to bring up the native context menu.
This means one has to either manually select links (making sure to not accidentally press them) or use an extension to block Discord from hooking the oncontextmenu event. This fully disables the Discord right click menu, which is actually quite useful in some cases meaning this isn't that good of an option either. If anyone knows if there is a way/keycombo/extension in Chrome to temporarily (aka without reloading the page) force the native context menu I would appreciate it.

Thanks PinoBatch; you deserve a medal. xD I’m still struggling to make a habit of holding shift, though.
I still have no idea whether this is a bug or the intended behavior.

If you encounter issues or have feedback about Discord's features, I recommend reaching out to Discord's support team or visiting their official community slope forums. Developers often actively listen to user feedback and may consider making adjustments based on user input.

Hi davis Davidjohn34.
I used to provide feedback via support / feedback tickets indeed, but, about 1–2 years ago, something weird started happening systematically: my bug report tickets are now converted, as soon as a staff member is assigned to them, into non-bug-report tickets. Nearly all the metadata disappears, including the info on my environment and the “steps to reproduce the bug”. This leads to extremely frustrating exchanges where the staff (which may not be from the right department, since the ticket type got changed arbitrarily) goes into full copypasta mode and sends out-of-topic replies, for example suggesting to reinstall the Windows desktop client, which is the exact opposite of the client I’m using. They also often litterally ask questions (or ask to try out things) that already have answers in my initial message.
It used to be easy to provide feedback that way, but now it takes a week or so just to get them to actually read what I wrote and respond in a way that makes sense. I now only go through that process as a last resort, for really hardcore issues. Dunno what’s going on with that support system; that’s just sad. o( u_u )o
As a developer myself, I know for a fact how vital user feedback is, but it seems that at some point, in Discord’s case, either something broke utterly, or someone decided that it was annoying to have to deal with feedback, and that hurdles should be placed on the path that we need to walk just to raise a friendly alarm about a blatant bug.
As for Slope, I took a look at the “About” page and I don’t quite understand how they’re related to Discord and how that could help, but I’m probably overlooking something.

… OK that davis david whatever-it-is seems to be a spambot advertizing random games / scams. Can’t believe I wrote such a blurb in response to it. No wonder that Slope thingy is out-of-topic. And I see no “Report” button.

Use caution when opening links in dinosaur game messaging apps granted extended permissions.

This issue is important to the entire community, because the usability and functionality of the platform affects our daily user experience. It is important that such questions as the beauty of white arabian horse images are not lost in the path of technological progress.
