Something between "Online" and "Do Not Disturb"
I'd like the ability to hear @mentions and when I get DMs, but not be tied into hearing all the regular notifications whenever somebody types in chat. My friends tend to message or ping me when I'm in a game with only 1 monitor and I often have a rather long response time because I'm in DND to avoid all the notifications.

You can customize your Discord notification settings to better suit your needs. Here the two main options:
• Disable notification sounds for certain channels: Right-click the channel name and select “Mute”
• Change sounds of pings, mentions, new messages and other by going to User Settings > Notifications and change to your needs!
Although that wouldn't be a totally bad idea, there is already a solution as I just explained. I hope that helped!
