DMs, Groups, and Notifications
I think we need to clean up this system of DMs. It is largely good and flexible, but there is still some mess to attend to; better yet, prevent.
Groups are a great thing, their addition alongside DMs have been good - except for matters of how much space they take.
It is a given that people will not opt-out of notifying members of the group when they leave (of course, we can have it be an opt-in). With this, we have to treat Group Chats separately to DMs, since it's frankly unreasonable to have dead and bumped Group Chats share an area with DMs. I've personally forgotten to reply to many DMs purely because the person was so far down on the list that I would have to scroll down two entire pages to reply. All because a group chat dying, by default, must bump it's priority? This is silly.
Of course it's seemingly sensible to leave 1~3 member group chats that have died, but it really just adds to the issue of digital trash - many people doing this will also not bother opting out of notifying existing members, thus continuing the chain of leave notifications. These groups being made and disposed of at a high rate would be manageable if they were not on the same page as DMs with individuals.
When such notification having to be actively opt-in is implemented, we would not bury more active Chats (whether Direct or Group) under Chats being left. Moreover, having Group Chats separated from Direct Messages will encourage users to treat Groups as a more intentional tool over a disposable function.
Please, not only make the notification opt-in (so that mass-left Groups don't bury active ones), but also look into creating a separate tab for Group Chats.
