Will be nice to manage large discords and help a lot to restructure the channel orders.

Has anyone from Discord development chimed in on this, I see it was posted 2 months ago at the time of my comment, we have a similar issue we've grown too many channels and would like to consolidate some without having to sacrifice the message history.  I'll be following this post and would love to know when/if this becomes possibly, or if anyone has come up with a creative work-around/hack to accomplish it, feel free to DM me ogsteviestrow#9765

This needs to become an actual appeal to Discord.

I don't know the technical downsides of making it into an option to merge channels and whether such downsides outweigh the upsides, I can only describe the upsides known to me and hope to see more users agree with it.

Channel merging allows us to move content from one channel to another already existing one without losing any of the content in either channels. The purpose of this is mainly of a discord server's maintenance background; it gives us more options to keep our servers tidy, but also allows us to keep certain content separate for a limited time that already has a fitting channel otherwise, but we want to keep it separately for a certain amount of time to make sure it's more noticeable by server members, and we want to preserve that content after it's not necessary to keep it on a separate channel anymore, but without having to make it an archive, closed channel that's just going to lay around the server forever because we don't want to remove the content that's in it.

I thought the same thing when I had to start thinking of ways to transfer info between channels that aren't needed anymore.

I'd love to see this feature implemented! I have 3 channels right now that for similar content and I want to merge them into one without losing all the posts to help cleanup my server

Please make this happen Discord! Too many channels but too much history to just delete them. :weary:

That explanation might be difficult to wrap around your head without an example, so here's one from my own server.

    - Server has general channel for games fanart

    - When DELTARUNE demo came out, it was incredibly popular in server, so we made a separate DELTARUNE fanart channel to keep it apart from all other fanart content as some people would come only to see the DELTARUNE fanart and not the rest.

    - DELTARUNE hype has died ever since by now. There's a whole load of DELTARUNE content in its separate channel that we absolutely don't want to get rid of, but we don't want to keep it as a separate channel anymore either. It doesn't fit the server aesthetics lines, it was meant to be a temporary HYPE channel.

Now we face the choice to either delete all the DELTARUNE fanart content to follow our aesthetics lines or keep the content separately at the price of less-appealing channels list appearance. That choice wouldn't be mandatory if channel merging would exist. The way I imagine it would work is that the content of one channel is placed in the other and follows the chronological server-time order. So the post time of each post from one channel would fit into and between the posts of the other channel, making it look as if there was never two channels to begin with.

That being said, I'm not a coder or developer of any kind so I've no idea how work-intense making such option is, or perhaps it's not worth the hustle for Discord Team at all if not enough users care about this.

Yes, please. I just tried clicking and dragging a channel over another to see if this was actually possible. Trying to merge NBA & NCAA threads together to make one basketball channel in my discord with buddies.

Discord's main argument against this was that the message sequence would be messy - I say if it's just a matter of changing a list of message to have a different parent channel, give the user the warning that the date/time ordering may look weird, and allow them to just do it. It can't possibly be that hard, and it's a highly requested feature that would make a lot of people happy.

Let's examine merging channels from a technical point of view.
Superficially it sounds like quite the simple feature. Assuming each message object has a channel ID signifing on which channel the message was written, all it takes to merge a channel is to change the channel ID of the Merged channel to the channel ID of the channel being Merged Into.
From permission/privacy point of view. It means that messages that were written in channel Merged with permission P_Merged are now going to be viewable to participants of channel MergedInto, with different permissions P_MergedInto.
I guess this is fine, because the admin doing the merging could also give participants of channel MergedInto access to channel Merged.
All I would add is a warning to the admin of groups with access to channel MergedInto that do not have access to channel Merged.

So... If it's so simple, why are Discord ignoring us and this simple feature??

Great idea!  Would be very useful.

We "archive" channels by making them admin-only, but it would be much better to merge.

This would be unbelievably helpful. Please add this.

I think the intent of this feature is to merge archived channels. Dead channels that you don't want to delete because there is great memories in it, but it aligns with a new channel you made. Like there is a pictures channel and a memes channel. Everyone stopped using the picture channel after the memes channel eased created, so you want to just merge then so you have less channels cluttering the server.

Yes, categories exist and you could just collapse then and never think about them again, but it would be nice to declutter some servers with so many identical channels.

2 years and highly requested feature and discord ignore us, same thing goes for another suggestion for sub categories 2 years ago and no response from discord... both seem easy to do from a technical point of view.

This is a feature I need. Let's be honest, most channels on Discord don't need the continuity of the conversation. Admins need to stay flexible and should be able to update their channel list without losing old but still somewhat relevant content

Definitely would like to be able to merge channels. I have both an "images" and "screenshots" channel with a lot of history that I'd like to merge on my server. I don't know why I didn't just have one channel for images in the past, but 3 years have passed and I don't want to archive/delete the "less" popular channel.

    +1!

is this the right place to push this suggestion up or is there a feature request area somewhere?

Merging channel is not a problem from the perspective of parallel discussions. It is normal for channels to have more than one simultaneous discussion. People quote each other. At any rate, this is a small caveat in comparison to losing the message history. The purpose with merging is to keep history and make it accessible and searchable, rather than deleting the channel.

    +1 for merging channels.

This would be really useful- Discord please add this feature request!

I would like to merge a few related channels but I'd prefer not to lose some of the historical photos and posts. It's okay and I don't mind if the new collective thread didn't make 100% conversational sense after being merged together, it's fine if it's just chronological, haha.

Alternatively, if would be great to be able to move select messages into another channel. Sometimes people accidentally post in the wrong channels, so being able to move messages would help for this use case and the former one, too.

Hum.... Just you could make a special category for ARCHIVES or something like that make it private or just READ-ONLY par ROLES etc... and sorry for my bad english I've justmake this kind of CATEGORY ... Its a structured way ... you could also close it, etc.   The new question would be.... Could we make a Category INSIDE another Category.... Kind of self-referenced programming object ? ....lol

(sorry my very bad english vocable...)

    What I'm wondering about:
If a channel merge would happen, how would you like to have the messages merged?
A channel containing the message history of 2 or 3 previously active channels, might seem nice at first glance, but it will "corrupt" the message flow time-wise. Someone reading back wouldn't understand a thing about what was being said, as 2, 3 or maybe even more conversations would be merged (zipped).. It is as if you are listening to 3 conversations in a room at the same time: Very confusing, and you would lose the core of all the messages.

  • Siren

@Master-Guy, not all channels have chronological conversations. Some just have data, like screenhots, links etc.  If they do have chronological conversations where it is important to maintain the flow, and the admin merges the channels anyway, then that is their prerogative.
