Screen keeps scrolling me up

How do I stop the screen from scrolling up?
I'm in the middle of a conversation, or even just trying to catch up and read what is going on.. and WOOOP, screen jumps up a few lines, or even pages.
When I look at a channel, I want it to auto-scroll to the latest information, unless I choose to scroll up to find the latest line I read. I do NOT want the software making any decisions for me.
Please for the love of god, how do I change this!?
