Switch between Nitro/Classing without losing your "Member since..." status

Hello everyone, 
As many of you might know the HypeSquad members were able to "gift" 1 free month of Discord Nitro
So my friend and I decided to give it to eachother.

So now my subscription is about to end and I'd like to renew it without all the games because I'm on an apple device which means I am unable to play the games anyway :P
Sadly there is no way to subscribe to a lower plan without ending your current one first. 
that means losing your "Member since" status only to change your subscription plan.

I had a small talk with the support and I thought about giving myself a "Nitro classic" as a gift? so it will just renew without removing the Member since status.
Sadly this is not possible.
It is also not possible to buy yourself a gift on a different account since you have to cancel your current subscription first and let it expire.

Anyway, I think it's kinda sad that you lose your "Member since" status when you wanna switch plan because basically you're still a member right?

    It does seem like an oversight - since you're a member regardless of how much you pay. 

    Though instead of a workaround involving switching memberships, I would say that there should be a grace period - something like a week after the end of a subscription - where someone can renew/change subscriptions without losing their "membership progress". Would be a lot simpler to implement and have other use cases.
