I think the RIGHT way to do this is to do a 'delete chat history' option that tells the user deleting the messages, the other person/people in the chat will have X days to respond or the chat will be permanently deleted.

THEN, the chat is removed to an 'archived' status where the requesting user no longer has access.
All other users are sent a notice IN THE CHAT to opt to save the chat or in X days they will no longer have access to it.

IF anyone in the chat who chooses to save, they get an "archive" chat version of the chat.
After X days, anyone who has not responded to the request to archive will no longer have access to the chat.

For personal privacy reason this NEEDS to happen.

    Ok, why?

My option allows a conversation to be fully deleted (eventually), but it doesn't allow someone to arbitrarily delete conversations that other's want to retain.  It allows control on both sides.

The person initiating the deletion may have good reason for wanting what was said to be erased from history. If the chat contains incriminating information, for example. Now if they other person declines to delete the history on their side, how do you resolve this without bringing in a third party who will then have to be made aware of the incriminating matter? There may of course be good reasons for wanting to retain that material, such as bullying messages. So I'm aware that its not a simple issue to resolve.

A solution maybe to password lock the conversation in such a way that both parties have to enter a password for the conversation to be unlocked.

yes, please. I dont want to hide conversations, I want to perm. delete them from both sides of the convo, like fb/msger/ other apps.  Espec. when ive blocked the other person.

You can already delete individual messages that you've sent; that should be enough for incriminating stuff.

As for not wanting to see a convo anymore, that should be an option if it's not already (I think it is since I see an X button next to DMs but I don't want to delete any of my conversations to test it). But that shouldn't effect the other side's ability to see it.
