I just want to send a ":)" to someone without having to make it "(:" or ": )". I don't want to send a smiley emoji, i just want a smiley in text. :)

  That has been a feature since a long time ago. Go into:
  
  User settings > Text & Images 
  
  And then disable "Automatically convert emoticons in your messages to emoji."
