Custom Messages vanish on closing app (mobile)

I set a custom status message on my profile on the mobile app, but everytime I return to my home screen, or my phone falls asleep for too long, the message does not display anymore. But when I go into settings, and open one of the tabs, it then displays again. Why is this? And is this a bug?
