Actual constructive suggestions to improve this new UI (including mock-ups)
I've been giving this a lot of thought and I've come up with some small, simple changes that I think would make this new design much more palatable.
Please remember that most Skype/Teamspeak/Mumble/Steamgroup users switched to Discord because they loved how sleek, modern, clean, and overall bloat-free it was. You're beginning to suffer from feature-creep, and that has already killed plenty of websites and programs that were just as popular as Discord is now.
Quick-react bar
Problem: Having quick access to my most used reactions is admittedly nice but the current implementation is obnoxiously in-your-face, especially for users who do not use emotes very often
Suggestion: When hovering over a post, only pop up the three dots and +react buttons but when you move your cursor to the +react button, then the three emotes appear.

Much less obtrusive and just as useful.
Darken post+timestamp on hover
Problem: Again, this can be useful at times but it's visually noisy and when you're trying to catch up on a conversation you missed and slowly scroll past a bunch of messages to read, it's especially distracting.
Suggestion: Hovering over a post will show the react button and dots but does not darken the post. Clicking the post will darken it and reveal the timestamp. The post remains darkened until either you click a different post or you click anywhere outside of the chat window (the sidebars, the message box, outside of discord entirely, etc)

Looks much cleaner and functionality is still there when needed. (Note that this effect is much more noticeable on actual messages in the middle of a conversation than on my small test post here)
Other small suggestions
- Have the red line for new messages fade a few seconds after Discord becomes the active window (i.e. clicking on it or alt-tabbing to it) if the chat is already scrolled to the bottom .
- Allow the new "space between message groups" setting to also control the space between consecutive posts from the same user. If the bar is set to 0px, you should not be able to tell the difference between two new lines within one post and two separate posts in a row from the same user.
- Maybe consider adding a third visual setting: Cozy, Compact, and a new option called "Clean" or "IRC" which removes as much visual clutter as possible. I know that's not exactly a 'small' suggestion, but in theory a simple, clean design would be much easier to maintain than Cozy and Compact once implemented.

Although I doubt they will take these suggestions into consideration, you've given some excellent ideas on how to lessen the impact of this new design.
The one thing that I personally can't do without is the lines between groups of messages. I never realized how useful they were until they were gone.14 -
I'm pretty doubtful myself and would honestly be surprised if any Discord employees even looked at my post... but I had to try, y'know?

this sounds stupid and pointless, three dots above the messages is too much. the previous interface was more convenient and took up less space. why not just implement the interface return option

Very nice set of suggestions. I really hope Discord does take note, because there are a lot of unhappy people right now.

I figured the closer we can be to the changes they want, the more likely we are to get something we want. My suggestions are a compromise between their ugly design and the clean design we all prefer.
