Hello there! If you’ve been using Discord for a while now, you probably noticed the mobile app was designed to reflect the desktop app. With this new iteration of Discord on mobile, we hope to make the mobile experience feel like it was optimized for your mobile device rather than a scaled-down desktop app. The new mobile design aims to simplify and improve the Discord experience for everyone by creating a more organized, streamlined, and better-looking mobile app that helps you get to your chats quickly and easily.
We’re actively gathering feedback as we release this change to ensure that we continue to provide the best experience on Discord. For those of you who have already experienced previous iterations of our mobile app, thank you for all the thoughtful feedback you've shared with us so far! We've been paying great attention to it and it's helping us continue to make improvements. If you’re new to this version of the app, be sure to explore the new mobile experience and all that it has to offer. If something doesn’t work for you, please let us know so we can continue to improve!
This Help Center article will explain the core updates to the mobile app and how you can provide feedback and thoughts on what does or doesn’t work for you.

Home Tab for your Messages and Servers
The Home tab, located in the bottom-left corner of the app, is where you can find all your servers and access your Direct Messages (DMs) and group chats.
Once you open the Home tab, you’ll see the Messages icon and all of your servers on the left of the screen. Tapping on the Messages icon will show all the DMs and group chats you’re part of. Tapping on a server will open it within the Servers tab and allow you to scroll through and open that server’s channels.
In each of your servers, you’ll be able to Favorite channels, use the search bar at the top of the server channel list to find messages and content in a server, and see the channel details of each server channel, which includes a list of the server members in that channel, the Media/Files/Links sent in that channel, the threads created, and more.
Messages Icon
Your DMs and group chats can now be accessed by tapping on the Messages icon [] at the top left corner of the server list.
You can also search across all of your DMs and group chats to find the chat you’re looking for selecting the search icon [].
Active Now
While in Messages, you can easily see what your friends are up to within the Active Now section. Active Now can show things such as:
- When your friends are currently in a Voice Channel in a mutual server
- A game your friend is playing
- If your friend is participating in any activity that supports Rich Presence, like listening to Spotify or watching something on Crunchyroll
- Your friend’s Status, including their Custom Status
Learn more about your own Activity Status settings here.
Favorite DMs And Group Chats
You can favorite direct messages (DMs) and group chats so that they stay pinned to the top of your Messages tab for quicker access.
1. To favorite a DM or group chat, tap on the Home tab > Messages icon.
2. While in Messages, navigate to the DM or group chat you would like to favorite.
3. Then, long-press it to open the options menu where you can tap Favorite.
You will then see the DM or group chat at the top of your messages with a star icon [] next to it.
You can repeat the same process and select Unfavorite to remove a G/DM from your favorites.
DM And Group Chat Details Page
From this page, you can search for messages sent in the DM or group chat, see its members and their statuses, and filter for the media, GIFs, files, and links shared there.
You could also use this page to find a specific photo that you sent, but don’t remember when you sent it. By selecting the Media filter, you can browse all of the images and videos sent in that DM or group chat quickly without having to scroll through the whole chat history.
DM And Group Chat Creation
From the Home tab > Messages, you can press the blurple Message button [] in the bottom right of the screen to start a new DM or group chat.
From here, you can type the names of your friends that you want to add or tap on their profiles to add them to the chat.
Once everyone is there, you can then tap on the text box at the bottom of the screen to begin sending a message. If you have an existing group chat with the users selected for the chat, you will automatically see that group chat instead of starting a new one.
If you do want to create a new group, just select New Group at the top of the screen before selecting any friends.
Add Friends
You can add new friends by heading over to the Home tab > Messages icon and tapping the Add Friends button.
Notifications Tab
We simplified your notifications experience to emphasize the things you can uniquely find in the Notifications tab, like friend requests.
All notifications in the Notifications tab are actionable: Join an event, message someone who just accepted your friend request, etc.
You no longer need to click a notification for it to be considered read in the Notifications tab, just seeing it is enough. The next time you return to the Notifications tab, all read notifications will be de-emphasized and new notifications will be emphasized so you always know what’s new and don’t have to actively clear your notifications.
Red badges will persist on the Notifications tab when you have pending friend requests, and you must resolve your pending friend requests to clear them.
You Tab
The You tab is your dedicated space to view and customize how you appear to others on Discord. You can find the You tab in the bottom right corner of the app. From this tab, you can easily edit your profile, set your status, view your friends, or manage your settings.
Friends List
We moved the Friends list to be in the You tab. To see your existing friends, view pending friend requests, and add new friends, tap Your Friends in the You tab. Only you can see your Friends list.
Settings & Settings Search
App Settings are still in this tab and you can now access them by tapping the gear icon at the top right of the You tab. If you want to get to settings quickly, you can also double-tap the You tab icon at the bottom of the screen.
You can now search within Settings. It’s a small but mighty improvement. Now, you don't have to waste time scrolling through every single setting to find what you're looking for. Simply type in the search bar and watch the magic happen.
Voice & Video Calls
We’ve updated the interface for voice and video calls. Before joining a voice call, you can easily preview the Text in Voice for that call without joining the call by tapping the quote icon to the right of the Join Voice button. Tap the microphone icon to the left of the Join Voice button to control whether you will enter the call muted or unmuted. You must tap the Join Voice button to enter a voice call.
Instead of opening the details and settings for a voice call, swiping up from the bottom of the screen now opens the Text in Voice chat for that voice call.
To find the details and settings for a voice call, tap the name of the voice call at the top of the screen. See below for the function of each button at the top of a voice call:
1. Minimize voice call within Discord
2. Open call details and settings
3. Change audio to speakerphone
4. Invite friends to call
To screenshare or start an activity, tap on the screen to reveal the bottom menu. Then you can tap on the rocket icon to pull up all available activities.
When in a voice call, you can double-tap on another user’s tile to make their video fullscreen.
When you're in a fullscreen activity or stream, double-tap to minimize it and get back to the rest of the call participants.
Swipe to Reply
We added swipe-to-reply on messages for faster witty retorts. Simply swipe from right to left across a message in a DM or channel to reply to that message.
Accessing Channel, DM, or Group Chat Details
Previously, swiping from right to left across a channel, DM, or group chat would take you to see the details of that chat such as pinned messages or a list of who is in the channel, DM, or group chat. To access channel, DM, or group chat details, tap on the name of the channel, DM, or group chat at the top of the screen.
New Customization Options
We’ve added more ways to make the Discord mobile app feel like your space through customization options. We added a new Midnight theme and the ability to toggle message previews in your Messages tab.
Themes
We added the new Midnight theme, which is pure black to go easy on your eyes and save battery on OLED compatible devices.
1. You can choose your theme by navigating to your Settings.
2. Select Appearance.
3. Then go to THEME and select your desired theme.
You can also toggle on Sync across clients to have your themes stay consistent across your desktop and mobile apps.
Midnight theme is currently not available on Desktop.
Message Previews
Make every unread DM a total surprise when you turn off message previews for added privacy and a more simplified chat look. To update your message preview preferences:
1. Navigating to your Settings.
2. Select Appearance.
3. Go to Message Previews and update your preferences.
