What are Apps?
Previously only available in servers, you can now add apps in direct messages (or DMs) and Group Chats! You can add a variety of curated apps to play and engage with your friends. Apps are created by Discord users and can vary from games to everything else in between. To learn more about apps, you can check out this article here.
If you’re an app developer and would like to learn more about apps on Discord, you can check out our Developer Support Help Center.
How to add Apps to a DM or Group Message
Desktop/Browser
1. On the right-hand side of the Discord app you'll see your friend’s profile in the DM you share or the member list of a group message. You may need to press on the User Profile or Member List icon to reveal this right-hand panel.
For a group message, you should see the Add Apps option at the bottom of the member list.
For a DM, it’s also located at the bottom but you need to first select Apps to reveal the option to Add Apps. Press on Add Apps.
2. An available list of all Apps that can be added to your group message or DM will be shown. To add an app, tap on Add for each app you want to add. Press on “Done” when you’re finished adding all of the apps you want to add to the DM/group message.
You cannot add apps from the App Directory to your DM or group message. Only available Apps will be displayed.
4. After you’ve added all apps that you want to add, you’ll see all your chosen apps under the Apps section in the member list of the group message and or under your friend’s profile in a DM.
And that’s it! Once the app has been added, you can use Slash commands to interact with the app.
Mobile
1. While in a group message or DM on the mobile app, press on the icon in the top right () that will show you everyone that is in the group message/DM. Under the DM/group message’s member list, you will see the Add Apps option.
2. You should see a list of all available apps that can be added to your DM or group message. To add an app, toggle on the slider next to each app. If an app’s toggle has an X, that means it won’t be added to the DM/group message. If there is no X, then that means that app will be added. Press on Done when you’re finished adding all of the apps you want to add to the DM/group message.
You can not add Apps from the App Directory to your DM or group message. Only available Apps will be displayed.
4. After you’ve added all apps that you want to add to your DM/group message, you’ll see all your chosen apps under the Apps section in the member list of the group message/DM.
And that’s it! Once the app has been added, you can use Slash commands to interact with the app.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Will my messages be read by an app if I add it to a DM/direct message or group message? What information about me will apps have access to?
A: Your messages will not be read by an app if you decide to add it to a direct message or group message. When you interact with an app in a DM or group message, along with the interaction information (e.g., your command to the app), the app can also access your basic profile information (e.g., username, user ID, avatar, banner, and public flags like the badges you have) and selected language. As a reminder, these apps have been developed by third parties so before you choose to use an app, you should review any terms and policies provided by the developer as they apply to your use.
Q: How can you remove an app from a DM or group message?
A: There are two ways to remove an app. First, you can right-click on an App in the DM or group message and tap on Remove App to remove the app at any time.
Second, you can tap directly on the profile of the app and then click on Remove App. A notification will appear in the DM or group message stating the app was removed.
Q: What can I do if the app isn’t working or I’m having issues with it?
A: The developer of the app (not Discord) is responsible for the app. If you experience issues with an app, please contact the developer (e.g., through a support server they maintain). If you experience issues with Discord, visit our Help Center for more information.
