Issues encroaching on other areas of the Messages UI/UX

There are issues with the small box encroaching on the message area, not the least of which is that if it's a reply to another message, the longer the respondent's nickname, the harder it is to see what the original message is.

It seems like a good idea to keep the small box higher than the message block.
