Assorted UX issues with "hold sparkles" mobile UI beta
I'll start by saying I generally dislike the feel of the mobile beta UI compared to the old one, and would prefer the ability to opt out of it above all. However, since I don't expect to be that lucky, what follows is the first set of user experience flaws that jumped at me from about ten minutes of sampling the new UI beta.
General navigation and gestures
- Swiping right from chat to channel list often fails if the gesture is not very deliberate, compared to the old UI where it can easily be done with a quick flick. There seems to be no good reason to change this, and I have to assume it is not intentional.
- Swiping left from chat to quick reply is a convention in many other messaging apps, but seems unnecessary for Discord, as it breaks the established continuity of having both directions open views. I would suggest that it be changed to open the new member list view that is currently accessed from chat by tapping the channel name.
- I'm not convinced a shortcut for quick reply is necessary at all, but if you want to have one, double tapping a message currently does nothing and seems like a good candidate.
- Swiping left from the channel list should return you to the last viewed channel (if applicable) to preserve continuity, instead of doing nothing.
- Likewise, pressing the "back" button in channel list should return you to the last viewed channel if the list was opened by swipe gesture, instead of minimizing the app.
- Pressing the "back" button in the expanded server list view should also bring you back to the channel list, instead of minimizing the app.
Legibility/clutter
- I have no interest at all in the "Active now" feature, and quite like how unintrusive it is on desktop. In the new phone UI it's front and center on the channel list and "Messages" views, and even includes custom activities that do not show up in the desktop equivalent. If you're keeping these cards at all, they should be relegated to a separate view one tap away from "Messages".
- With the activity cards removed, there is no reason to keep the top slider carousel in channel list just for a card linking to the user list, which can be accessed by other means (see above section). It should be removed to reduce clutter.
- Likewise, the top slider carousel in the "Messages" view with your entire friend list by icons serves no useful purpose and takes up excessive space. It is extremely cumbersome to navigate and should be replaced by having the smaller search bar visible by default.
- The bottom slider carousel for servers in the channel list view should not list all of your foldered servers as separate icons, as this makes it much harder to navigate and defeats the purpose of folders. Instead, each folder should have a single icon, leading to that folder in the expanded server list view.
Specific to new user list view
This one is generally a good idea, and I appreciate the tabs for listing different media in a channel. However:
- "Media" is a very ambiguous category label for what I presume includes photos and videos, but excludes gifs. I would suggest either putting "Photos" and "Videos" in separate tabs and letting the "files" tab alone serve mixed media attachments, or removing the "GIFs" tab and including those under "Media".
- Some image attachments do not currently show up under the "Media" tab, but do show up as "https://cdn.discordapp[...]" under the "links" tab. I can only assume this is a bug and not intentional.
- Accessing any of these tabs is currently very unreliable and prone to either infinite loading animations, or a false "no results found" view. I assume this is a bug.
The aforementioned changes should bring the new UI up to where I'd consider it viable for a full release. Thank you for your time.
