Username Changes Unnecessary
Plenty of other posts have already been created on this subject, but I think it's important to show how many people are against it. The username change is not only unnecessary, but user-unfriendly.
- Discord will lose money on this. I already know Nitro users that are cancelling because the ability to customize their nametag was one of the main reasons they used it. Also, to the people who have paid for months or even years to keep their unique tag, it's unfair to take away that service.
- This WILL lead to the username trades you see on apps like Instagram and Vent, where people will hoard accounts with rare or desirable usernames and sell them to other users.
- The fact that it's only alphanumeric characters (A-Z), numbers (0-9), and two special characters (periods or underscores) is dumb and excludes users who don't speak English. It's even worse considering how many people use Discord to connect with people in other nations and practice language skills. If you're, for example, a Japanese user, it's extremely unintuitive to be forced to use the Latin alphabet for your and your friends' usernames. For another example, if you're a French user named André, you just...can't put your actual name in your username.
- Finally, most people don't WANT to be forced to change their usernames. My username has just been my first name for the past five years. I like being instantly recognized and referred to by my name. I don't want to be forced to change it to something where I'll have to repeatedly re-introduce myself, or make it look tacky by slapping on a bunch of numbers at the end. I'm sure this sentiment is mirrored by a lot of people.
In conclusion, the username change is unwelcome, and I'm really hoping it goes the same way as the NFT incident where enough people push back for Discord to realize they're making a bad choice and step back on going through with it.
