Old messages should not be reformatted with the markdown update
I've been in a roleplaying server with a person who posts messages like this:
*does the thing *
Note the lack of space after the first asterisk. In older versions of discord, this was not interpreted as italics, however, presumably with the markdown update, this has been changed to be interpreted as italics.
While I understand that it is a bit ambiguous in the markdown spec, and perhaps makes sense moving forward, this should not have been applied retroactively to all messages. This includes messages from 2021, long before the bullet lists started breaking things.
Existing messages in this (and similar) forms should use the old parsing logic and not display as italics.
(I sent this as a bug request, but was told that this is apparently an intentional feature. I was then told to make a feature request here to revert it.)
