Request: paid membership type for writers
Dear Discord,
since I started using discord I wrote and shared multiple novel-length stories with friends and other writers on your platform. I see a market opportunity where you can grow your PAYING userbase without straying too far from the initial target demographic (gamers). I propose a new type of membership based on relatively modest changes to existing features.
Gamer culture extends beyond the game itself, into fan-culture. The most creative fans are usually girls and women. They play games too, but the creative types choose only a few games and build audiences and friendship circles around it in fanfiction and fanart and cosplays and role-plays. Many of the creative types engage in text-based role-plays where they impersonate characters from games/films/books etc.
I would pay a monthly fee to be able to:
- download my chat history (aka my 'completed story')
- double or triple the character limit in the chat box
- be able to toggle off the "he said/she said at [timestamp]" line at the start of a chat-message. (This sentence interferes with reading the completed text)
- (in one server) have different nicknames in different channels (for roleplay purposes, so I can write multiple stories at the same time.
There's no convenient platform for these writers. Many of my friends use tumblr-chat, facebook private pages, whatsapp, or instagram, or discord, or email, BUT since the Great Purge of Fanfiction.net a few years ago, most writers are conscious of the importance of freedom of speech. I expect they/we will (at some point) want to discontinue interacting with platforms that severely limit freedom of speech... monopolistic platforms that forget that writing fictional content is precisely that--fictional.
I imagine writers like myself will want to upload their finalized products to Fanfiction.net or ArchiveOfOurOwn, where they have established audiences. So this membership would only be for sharing updates about games/films/fandoms, and writing and editing the stories. Seeing as many of my friends are already using this platform for that purpose, why not try to slap a small fee on it? I'm thinking of 1 or 2 dollars a month; if it keeps me from hitting the character limit (nevermind the other suggested features I mentioned), I will happily pay up!
I hope you will consider this suggestion in earnest.
Warm regards,
LadyAisha#2835
