Opinions on the updated visual branding
Howdy Discord team, I hope you guys are doing great! I would like to share my opinion on the updated look you guys put out. First of all I love that you guys want to change to show that you're growing and that nowadays there's all kinds of people from all walks of life joining discord. But with this recent change I think there's some aspects that give off the wrong impression.
To give credit where credit is due, the small change on the actual logo itself is an improvement! Like you said, the edges not only were asymmetrical but it also made printing a big issue and despite me preferring the old logo the new one still captures the same essence! Moreover, while I also prefer the old font which I found very stylish and easy to read from afar I do get a friendly feeling from this new one so I don't mind that change as well.
Unfortunately though I fear that the color change does not have the same effect. While I do get why you guys wanted to have a more vibrant blue to appeal to the new varied audience coming on to the platform, I think it ultimately comes across as a very corporate decision. A plethora of other social platforms already use some shade of blue and it has worked for them in the past, but even if your brand uses a more vibrant shade of blue (and sorry to be blunt, but it kinda hurts my eyes) it still makes it seem similar to everything that came before it. And in the way I see it that has the effect of making Discord look like it's "yet another soulless social app" while I know (and I bet you guys know it as well) that you're way better than that! You're way better than Facebook, Twitter, Skype and so on! So why do you want to look more like them?
The Blurple you guys used, even if sometimes limiting for creating new UI designs, had such an interesting new visual style I've personally never seen used anywhere before! Back then it gave me the first impression that this was a place I could just be myself and still find places where I could belong! And this is exactly what Discord became to me and so many people, so much so that without you guys I wouldn't have found a place my grandma and her friends could use to continue their choir lessons which were so essential to them during this pandemic! And I wouldn't have met the wonderful people I have across the entire world!
So even if I might not know everything from color theory and branding studies... I do speak from the heart because this platform matters so much to so many of us. So even if in the end you guys decide against going back... at least give it a thought. Or maybe even making it a customizable feature since so many users have so many different opinions and tastes about all of this, making it truly an unique place for all kinds of people to feel like they're home!
Thank you for listening to all of this and please have a wonderful day! Greetings from Brazil!
