    +1, this feature request is similar to how it works in Slack.

    Servers for work benefit greatly from this. A design team wouldn't care about purely tech discussion, for example. The current workaround is telling people to mute those channels when they join for the first time as there is no default mute setting in Discord either.

    Roles are not enough for this as admins have immediate access to all servers.

    Yes this would be so nice. I have way too many notifications and this would solve that issue.

    There is already an option as such.

    Therefore go to your Server > Settings > Overview > Notifications (scroll down a little bit)
    and select the option "only @mentions"

    KiddingKitteh I think what is being asked here includes also the "unread" bold status font for channels. The idea is that you start joining just one or two channels automatically when you join a server, and then you can search or browse the channel list of the server and manually "join" them, thus displaying them on the side bar, enabling notifications for them and showing the "unread" status if messages have been sent to them.
