Make Group Chats into Servers
Hello fellow discord members.
I wanted to shine light on this topic, in which you could turn a group chat into a server.
So (a little backstory) me and my cousins have had a group chat from pretty much ever since discord launched. Never once did we delete the group chat and start a new one, it's been the same ever since we made it. I one day decided to call the group to play a game of VALORANT, but I didn't want to ring the whole group, press stop ringing on their names, and then have them join later. I wanted to be able to just hop in a vc and wait, like you can do in servers. So I made a server very recently. And yeah, it helps out, because whoever you NEED to join will be the only person joining, and people can join in later.
However, the slight problem is now the inconvenience in messages. Some days the group chat will be blank and I just don't want that. I want to be able to look back at JUST the group chat, so then I don't have to go into the server, or back and forth trying to find something.
So my idea for the group chat becoming a server:
-We don't want too many servers to the point where there are no group chats, so your group chat has to be at LEAST 1 year old in order to qualify for a change to a server.
-It'll show that the server was made when the group chat was made.
-You will be able to change it BACK to a group chat, by contacting discord. (To change to a server, you do it yourself, to change back to a group chat, you contact discord)
-You will still have BOTH a server and the original group chat, but you won't be able to send messages in the original group chat. It will edit along with what is said in the server, so that in the event you would like to switch back, all the edits/ messages sent, are still in the group chat.
-The server will be limited to ONE text channel. I'm uncertain on how we can input multiple text channels, but for the release, your server will be limited to ONE text channel.
- It may be possible to add multiple text channels, but in this case you will no longer qualify for changing your server back to a group chat.
-You will also be limited to ONE voice channel along with a maximum of 15 members.
(A slight increase of the current 10 members that discord allows in group chats)
We want small groups from group chats for these servers, not huge servers with thousands and thousands of members. 15 members will be the limit.
-Only the owner will have kicking permission. There will be no server invite so therefore no banning will be needed. Although I am curious how this will work....
-There will be 2 roles just as in group chats, members, and owner (who is also a member, just with permission to kick anyone they want)
- I'm sure raiding won't be a problem, considering it's only a small group, and no server invites, only adding members. (Someone's gonna find a way to mess this up)
So, what do you guys think? Anything I left out?
Let me know by contacting me on discord

Hi ;)
In this case, it would be best to remove the group chat and create a server with one text and voice channel. Turning a group chat into a server does not make much sense and carries many dangers. Imagine that you belong to dozens of group chats and without your consent they turn into servers where one of the chat members owns the server. Then you have a lot of servers you don't want to belong to. Also, strangers can add you to a group chat and turn it into a server forcing you to join the server.0 -
Hi!
You're right, this does include many dangers. However, this is why I suggested a group chat existence minimum of AT LEAST 1 year.. Along with your problem of being in dozens of group chats; I am not completely sure of anyone else but this specifically I wanted to do for me and my cousins. We all collectively want to make our group chat in to a server. Obviously if you're added to a group chat which then becomes a server, you are allowed to leave whenever you like and it'll be an invite basis for a server just like normal, and an add to a group chat, just like normal. If you request your server to become a group chat again too many times, it will be stuck in group chat mode forever. Additionally, before switching from a group chat to server, Discord could give a small warning like they do when pressing on external links! Something like "To turn to a server is a huge change, you can confirm now OR turn back now. ONLY after confirming will there be another message that says "You will have to contact discord to turn your server back to a group chat", triggering a final confirmation between the user and discord. If they decide not to, they can just press a button or esc key on their keyboard (escape). I think this idea could be really good for some discord users! Please let me know on what you think!
NOTE: I forgot to mention bots in my original post. But for a "group chat : server", bots will NOT be allowed/added. If you would like to add bots, then an actual server will have to be created AND will be the better option. These "group chat : servers" will have a max of 15 members like I mentioned before.0
