Discord never fails to disappoint. (Swipe to reply and many others)
I've been a user for a while now, and I've had a good, long while to see the evolution of the discord Mobile app.
I remember when it was tossed together, with a layout that only barely functioned. It was a disappointment, knowing that discord had sent the B team to make the original mobile version.
I remember when they tried to update the mobile experience, and instead broke every single aspect that I found useful: notifications didn't function, typing was unbearable and the text box wouldn't follow your current typing. It was a disappointment, knowing the most basic text functionality was more or less absent.
I remember when they first tried to implement swipe to reply, a needless and functionless accessibility nightmare that duplicated functionality for replies and removed functionality for membership and role viewing. It was a disappointment, to see them sloppily force an idea out and actively worsen the UX. The only saving grace was that they EVENTUALLY removed the ‘feature’.
And now we're here. Forced “experimental change” as a design philosophy has repeatedly trashed the UX, and we've come right back around to it. This time they didn't even have the courtesy to mention this forced change in the patch notes. It's a disappointment to know they just won't let a failed experiment die, instead forcing people to take an active and large hit to user experience for… some ungodly reason. Pride? The point is, discord never fails to disappoint. Heavens forbid they leave something functioning for more than a month- absolutely dumpstering the UX and layout is part of the process, part of what every user should come to expect.
To anyone at discord who reads this, (a sentiment that I know is in vain, because if you people read these, we wouldn't be HAVING this issue for the second time in a year.) I hope that you change your mind. I hope the practice of forced experimental UX changes to users who don't opt in changes, I hope the desire to force stupid, repetitive changes that absolutely ruin accessibility changes. I hope that discord changes, because at this point, expecting failure is the norm. And I wish it wasn't.
