Setting to turn off mention by default when replying
Request:
Add a setting or other toggle-able method so that users can change the default behavior when using the ‘reply’ feature on a message. Currently the default is to always @mention the user that wrote the message, with the option to overrule pinging the user on individual messages.
This could either be a toggle-able setting in the server Notification Settings, or a “remember my last manual choice” feature. In the latter case, this should ideally be remembered between logins.
Reasoning:
Whether it was expected or not, the way that users generally utilize the reply feature is, in my experience, most often to casually clarify which message their own message is in response to. That is, they're not so much replying to another person, as they are reacting to something a person said. My point being that they don't usually want to ping the user that wrote the message, but just want to provide context for what they're saying. Due to pinging users being the default, however, users will forget to manually toggle off the ping.
My experience as a user is that pings become rampant in chats. Even if it's just a few people talking and there's no particular confusion about context, users use the reply feature excessively. For whatever reason, users seem to love to use the reply button all the time.
Seems like a classic case of user intuition going against the intent of the programmer's expectation.
Hence why i think a feature like this would help users' experience by decreasing unintended pings.
