New Desktop UI Scaling Focuses on the Wrong Things
The new UI that rolled out yesterday (March 25th) has caused focus on the desktop app to shift to the exact wrong places, and makes it much harder to see and navigate.
- Server Icons:
- Server icons are now square, which makes it difficult to tell what server you might be in at a glance like you once could. The shift to all server icons being square makes Discord look much more rigid and ruins some of the fluidity of using it.
- Server icons are now much too small for the application, and the amount of space offered to them worsens the user experience. I am not someone who needs glasses for seeing everything, but I do use reading glasses, and the current UI scale is too small for me to see them most of the time. This paired with the icons now being square means I and other users cannot see our servers properly.
- Title Bar:
- The title bar now features the name of the server you're viewing (or showing that you are in your DMs), and is also much larger than it was before. This was a completely unnecessary change in my opinion, as users can already see what server they're in – it's displayed just below the title bar and is much more obvious to the user since the channel names are right there and already draw the eye to them.
- The size of the title bar is another thing – it calls attention to it where it isn't needed, making the overall UI more cramped feeling. Elements that used to scale perfectly in alignment at the top of the app now sink lower, and it makes the app look overall incomplete or ignored.
- User Settings and Voice Chat Box:
- The user/VC box being unaligned with the text box causes the flow of the app to stunt itself, and the fact the box is now free-floating but unmovable gives the impression that it might be covering up important information like servers lower on a user's screen or chat rooms that may be at the bottom of the list, especially with how close in proximity these features end up being when they're aligned.
Fix ideas:
- Make elements like server icon size their own separate item to scale in the Appearance or Accessibility settings.
- Revert to the prior UI layout.
- Tweak new UI changes to be aligned and focus on what matters most on the screen: servers and navigation.
