I hear ya but they just leave this feed alone without even an explanation of why this can't happen. I would love to hear from a coder or engineer as to why they have either turned a blind eye or it just can't be done. Otherwise, this feed will continue expanding.

I'd say it's more like leaving a 1 star review for a restaurant which doesn't serve a certain food (and does not give any feedback on why they don't or if they will ever serve that food)

Sure - if it's a Mexican restaurant that doesn't serve tacos.

Not quite, Warrior. There were no spoiler tags or quoting format. People requested those things and they happened, even though they weren't on the menu prior to being requested. I wouldn't leave McDonald's a 1-star review because they won't start serving pizza. But if no one comes to the counter to take my order.... 1 star. Or if they hang a sign over the trash can that says "submit comments here" then I'll find a different platform for my comments.

I'm starting to get more invested in this analogy now. XD

If we're not able to pick custom buns for each burger we order at McDonald's, are we going to leave a 1 star review? :D

Even though this thread has not accomplished its intended goal it has made me a ton of friends. Everyone who has ever posted under this topic is my friend! I'm buying everyone hamburgers at McDonald's if they ever release "Custom hamburger buns per burger" at McDonald's!

This feature would be very appreciated!

I recommend that everyone received this comment today, Request it again. Why not let them know that this is something we all wish to have on their app. Maybe they will catch on with another explosion of requests! Also up post any one requesting this!

Having the ability to have a different avatar on each server I belong to would be a great addition to Discord.

I'm still interested in this feature!

This is an awesome Idea! I This might be an easy to code to coat tail your mail avatar as a little bubble and represented your server avatar like... Danimal0017= main avatar, Danimal0017/DestinyLFG = different avatar with your main pic in the bottom left or right. Its a carry along identity.

I know nothing about coding but for some reason I think this would be an easy thing to create. Its your avatar at a location and each location (server) you are able to host its own avatar! Fantastic Idea Evil Turtle

Lets ALLLLLLL vote yes on this!

I've up-voted every non-negative post since page 13. We've added a lot of comments today, alone. Here's to hoping it draws *someone's* attention.

I've been subscribed to this thread for like 2 years and got more than 200 e-mails so far and non of Discord themselfs.

Are you seing the problem here Discord?

Ghosting us all is not the solution, making this finally a thing or telling us literally ANYTHING is the solution.
I would even accept a simple "no, this is not going to be a thing", just get us out of this limbo already.

I agree. Saying nothing is literally the worst thing they can do. Even saying "No, we can't do it..." is better than this infinitely growing thread...

To be fair, they have addressed it, just, on twitter, not here:

https://twitter.com/discordapp/status/963096912172912641?lang=en - Feb 12 2018: suggesting to create this issue here (it already existed)

https://twitter.com/discordapp/status/1038053550364995584 - Sep 7 2018 (I think this was about per-server avatars, but the tweet it responded to is not visible, so I may be wrong) - acknowledging it is oft-requested issue.

https://twitter.com/discordapp/status/1046439527533989889 - Sep 30 2018: suggesting to upvote this issue.

https://twitter.com/discordapp/status/1127251372573974530 - May 11 2019: (latest comment I can find). "We are aware that users would like to be able to change their avatar on a per server basis. I do not have any update on if/when this will be implemented. I apologize for any frustrations."

If they haven't managed to get any further with squeezing this feature into their near-term roadmap, I can see why they might not have another update for us yet.

Unlike other companies, Discord does not have a public roadmap (per https://twitter.com/discordapp/status/846821186168336386?lang=en "There's no roadmap available unfortunately. However, we are still working on any announced features!"), so we can't tell if this is on it.

With suggestions, their approach is to redirect people from twitter to here, so they can track the popularity of the request, but likely also to move the discussion into a more controlled private space with no public voice.

At the moment, since it's an obvious shoo-in as a nitro feature, and many have explicitly said they'd buy some level of nitro for this feature, I suspect they have some underlying architectural problem with avatars, which would also explain the throttling on avatar changes, and the inability to flag avatars as NSFW so they'd be visible only in suitably flagged channels, etc.

Ideally in a case where a product lacks a feature we want, we'd just volunteer to write some code that does the thing we want. Some of us have a lot of experience handling problems of improbable scale, and Discord does have some open source parts (see https://discordapp.com/open-source). Unfortunately the relevant parts don't seem to be on that list, and I can't find any documentation online of their avatar-handling architecture, so it'd be next to impossible to submit a suggestion at an architecture or code level that would be worth their time to review.

We could try some DIY approach? Discord has no modding/extension support, but a browser extension could at least change the client behavior to change avatar portraits, but only people who ran Discord in a browser, and ran the extension, would see the changes, so likely not worth doing?

I 100% agree. I don't want a picture of myself super easily available to every server, but it's weird to have various gaming avatars in groups with people I know IRL.

i think this is a planed feature. Why? The API Model DiscordUser has two properties for AvatarURL (DefaultAvatarUrl and AvatarUrl)

One DIY solution I can think of is just make separate accounts and code some kind of account switcher to switch between them effectively. Only join the channels relevant to the avatar. You won't be working while you play or vice versa anyway. Or be in another game's discord when you're playing a game. Sorry guys but this is our only option if they won't do this!

Tossing in my comment again here. Multiple accounts don't work for everyone. Not to mention being needlessly tedious, a lot of my gaming community are also clients for work. It would be wonderful to have a different icon for my D&D group, gaming groups, and default/work/social.

Just wanted to emphasize the desire for this feature. I made a server for a guild of mine on an MMO, and some other players and myself think it would be great to have pictures of our characters as our profile pictures on the server, but that's not something we'd want in other places. It's great that our nicknames can be server specific, and it would be fantastic if our pictures could be too!

This feature is sorely needed. I have a DnD group and I would love for our pictures to be of our characters, but none of us would want that to carry over to every other server we're on. How has this been open for over a year with 19 pages and no response. Wtf

We need more up votes for the main question. If you have not done so, please take the time to up vote the initial post. This will move us higher on the list rather than by comments as there are many comments on this feed that are useless to the cause. Anyone interested in blow them up on twitter?

I agree! I'm in multiple D&D groups that play via discord, and my characters are very different from each other. Would love this!!

This would be extremely awesome! >.< Could even make it part of Nitro if data is an issue to help fund for it more.

YES I need this I’m already in a roleplay server that I’m in and it sucks that I can’t just put my pfp as obi-wan because of other servers

My Discord would like to have their avatars be of their characters. PLEASE CONSIDER THIS!!

Is this planned but hard or something, or is this whole thread being completely ignored?
Like is there any other official statement than "Yeah, we saw the thread a year ago"
