To be honest with you, the 2,000 Character Limit is there for a reason. Also, 2,000 Characters is a lot of words/numbers/symbols. There are many ways you can bypass this such as Notepad Files, Google Docs, Microsoft Word Files, Multiple Messages, etc. Once again, good idea but the feature is there for a reason and we don't think it should be removed.

Also - Discord isn't made just for Text RP. You can't just make suggestions for one thing, you have to remember that other people might not enjoy your suggestion. Anyway, you have a good one.

I'm not asking for it to be removed indefinitely.
I'm asking to give the server owner the option to turn the limit on or off. So people that start coding or story servers, they can turn it off and post their large texts without problems.

I think it’s important to remember that this isn’t just an issue in servers. DMs shouldn’t have a limit either. Or you should be able to change a setting in account management to have the limit either on or off. Or at LEAST a setting to allow or disallow a limit when getting messages from friends. (Similar to allowing stranger messages or not.) I only am in one server and the issue isn’t there but when I am privately talking to friends we run into it nearly every time. It’s not being mindful to others when we have to break one message up 2 or 3 times.

I know so many ppl who would love to raise the character limit. We use it for RP and character building and basically everyone in the chat hits the limit and feels bad about having to cut their content down

There should be an option - I want somewhere lower limit, like 1k chars, but somewhere the 2k limit is too low for some things. There should be an option for roles, where you could edit the limit (for example up to 10-15k)

Everyone commenting on this should make another thread, they can't ignore it that way.

I agree. in a perfect world I would say it should be like 10,000 to 12,000, however since i know that's probably ridiculous I think a good number would be 5,000 or 4,000.

100% agree with the suggestion. Roles that have the administrator permission should be exempt from a character limit in their own servers. Best-case scenario is a completely customizable character limit by role and channel, with the ability to remove it in a channel all together. Direct messages, as other people have said, shouldn't have a limit at all.

So many Discord RP'ers want this. As many have said, just have it as an admin option for certain channels. Perhaps it could just be doubled to 4000 characters in general? That would actually help quite a bit.

I beg discord to give expanding the character limit, or giving us options, a thought. The argument that discord isn't a text-format is honestly ridiculous. It's a literal text based platform used to communicate. How the communication is played out shouldn't matter, there's obviously a problem with the users that the 2k limit is too small. Discord servers have a multitude of uses, from bots, to artists, to gamers, to writers, and back to just basic instant chatting. I'm sure the limit is there to avoid large paragraphs of spam, but if given the option, it wouldn't be an issue in private servers.

Please, Discord. Your userbase wants this.

I also agree. It would be very convenient to have more than 2k character to work with. But I'm sure there's a limit because the server probably can't handle it. I suppose just increasing the character limit would suffice on some cases. 5k would be okay for me, personally.

Agree with this suggestion and would like it to be a feature to set the character limit per channel or even just increase it globally, I run an RP server and too many times would we complain about the linits, atleast 10k characters would be wonderful.

    If only....

We are writing a book and we need character building, races, whole worlds. I have to split up a race in 2 or 3 paragraphs, because of the 2k limit.

    Here some ideas:

Either an option for the owner of the server to pick from 2k - 5k - 10k - 25k in their server settings.

If it is too much hassle, implement it with Nitro classic ( 5k ) and higher Nitro ( 10k ).

I am also frustrated by the limit and would like to see the administrator option to remove it. I assume it's to stop spamming or something but on a private server that shouldn't really be an issue.

I'm back here again with the exact same problem. I really feel like Discord is never going to address this problem because they just don't care. We have switched to google docs, which is really clunky and painful when you have a lot of roleplayers. We want to use Discord. Everything else is perfect for our group EXCEPT THE CHARACTER LIMIT.

I do not understand what the problem is. Just allow administrators to set their own character limit. Let them assign roles that are allowed a certain number of characters.

Is it too much to even ask for a 4000 character limit??? Apparently so.

I really wish I could make my own application for roleplaying. Everyone I know uses it for roleplaying. Even the game centric ones also contain roleplaying sections or fiction sections.

I'm just so so so frustrated. I've been watching this thread update for YEARS. And everytime I make a new one it is just deleted as a duplicate. Ridiculous. A problem that was relevant in 2017 is still relevant now. It's just being completely dismissed.

Did they ever say why they made this change? I don't remember them ever posting in this thread?

I'm so sad... I started DMing a campaign for my friends on Discord and I can't write my texts over 2k characters. It's so annoying, it would be amazing if admins had the possibility to change the character limit on servers – I'm not asking much, at least 5k would be fine, more than that you can add nitro features. Take this on consideration, please mods and users of Discord.

    Please add the requested functionality!

We need more characters to for our games discord server when we're posting the changelog for an update. 2000 characters is not enough :(

As a writer I 1000000% agree that this should be lifted for at least admins.
Or even just boosted severs? Anything, really.

Please make the limit adjustable or remove it. This is stupid. At least let the servers be able to adjust the character limit?

Regardless if Discord's intended use is or isn't for Rp. I think it's fair you should be able to TRY and make a few small changes and adjustments. I'm no master of code, but is it really that hard to do this?

I actually really enjoy using it for streams, chatting AND role playing. Please keep in mind that there is a lot of people who likes your way of setting up categories in servers for things like role playing. Thank you for reading, hope you can answer my question soon.

p.s. Please do not suggest using google docs thing. It's annoying to do that. I want my texts to be all in one post when I post a thread in an rp. I like to use it for keeping track of rp timelines with other admins, so they too can edit it, and to submit character applications for my members. But it is stupid to use it for the rps itself...

Like many other people, it gets in the way of various writing based practices. The ideal thing would be to make it optional, or have it be a limit set by the server admin or for dms it can be in user settings. This way you can prevent people from doing big blocks of texts (turning on the character limit or being able to set it), or you can turn it off or extend the limit if thats the niche of your group. 2000 perhaps can remain as a default.

The fact that this hasn't been responded to by a developer after a full year of people requesting this feature...

+1 to this. This is a real annoyance to me.

I just want to add my voice to this issue too. My friends and I are all academics and have been using Discord for a about four years to have casual philosophical discussions which works great. Unfortunately the conversations inevitably conclude due to time constraints and end up being moved over to text channels as it allows people to respond at their leisure. For us this quickly becomes problematic as it can be very difficult to make a good argument with a 2000 character limit. There are of course other options for us. Email for example. The way I see it, however, is that it would be disadvantageous for Discord to foster an environment that pushes people off the platform and onto another.

@Forkentiney Discord is only four years old, FYI...

@Moongeist You're right. We used Teamspeak before that. My mistake.

I agree, I own a server and it is very annoying to split up messages. Maybe make it a role permission like "bypass word count", or maybe you could just type in the number for the role,

I also do a lot of RP with my DnD group and our messages are consistently too long for the character limit. We started on here and cant imagine moving it anywhere else, but it is frustrating, especially on mobile where you cant see when you get close to 2K. Then you send and have to copy paste and cut the message and check for any pre sending editing that is now gone. because it does not copy the editing marks like **. I understand why it is necessary for server groups that are made for announcements and chatting, but having the option to turn it off for book and character analysis or for RP would be a god send to RPers and book clubs that use this site. Along with coders. Please consider making this change.

2k for block of code is too few :((( 4k will be enough, I think.
