You do realise that Discord itself is a free service to use. They don't flood you with ads or force you to buy anything. Servers cost money to run. The fact that they already allow you to upload an 8MB file to their servers unlimited amounts of times without any compression is already very generous compared to other services that would either compress your file to almost being unusable or don't even allow you to upload that sort of size to their service. Discord increasing their upload limit is just gonna make it LESS fair towards the people who pay for nitro. Use another service such as Imgur if you want to share larger images to other people.

Agreed, not enough to share files / videos. If discord doesn't want storage issues, then increase the limit (for non-nitro members) have a thing where its like: "Your file will be autodeleted after x days. If you want to remove this message, buy nitro) or something like that

This should be more like 200-300MB without paying There's times where I want to dump a ton of pictures such of those of my rig which are full resolution raw files to a chat en-mass. This can't be done with the size limits that are in place now. Those of you that don't see this as an issue obviously don't understand the real need for this and don't understand the importance of having full quality pictures.

I agree. I have a 4k laptop and I can't send screenshots at all since they exceed 8MB. It's really annoying having to constantly go on image sharing sites, and shady resizing websites every time I want to share any sort of screenshot to my friends. Sometimes even pictures I take from my phone is too big to be sent on discord, and it can be very irritating.

I am a full time student, and can't afford nitro all year (which is nearly $70 per year for me, even without the gaming version of it) so even discord compressing images to 8MB for free users would be fine, as long as my friends can see my screenshot without going out of my way to make it smaller.

I do understand this may cause issues with storage and bandwidth, but it is something that I feel like the team should at least keep in the back of their mind.

    +1 I can't even share a 11 seconds 720p video!
I could use H265 but Discord doesn't support it yet, so... convert down to 360p? lol

When I take screenshots with my iPhone XS Max the file size is over 8mb....can't even send screenshots in discord.  I am so close to getting my buddies group chat to discord, raise it to like 15!! :) thanks, love the program.

Please increase image size to 10mb for gifs for everybody free users 75mb to 85mb for videos and nitro 200mb this should be more than enough.  Here is another idea any server with the admin is a free user that server gets 350gb space and the admin of server that is nitro gets 750gb of space.   Really free users should get 150mb to 175mb for videos and nitro users get 300mb to 350mb for videos I know this to high.

Sorry But there should be NO discrimination and NO special treatment for nitro users... It creates problems...... Either EVERYONE gets files at 100-300+MB/upload or NOBODY does. Fair Use for everyone.... Kill the file limit increase perk on Nitro give them some other perk such as 300 discord points a week or month.

Must be idiots with Nitro Negating my comment..... so here again.... NOT EVERYONE CAN AFFORD NITRO....those of you with NITRO that are DOWNVOTING what I say are SNOBS. Snobs don't belong here. Upvote because What I say is right.... Nitro is discriminatory.... They got the increase and they promised an overall increase in file size and didn't do it..... GET RID OF THE NITRO PERK OR CHANGE IT WITH AN INCREASE IN FILE SIZE FOR THEM AND INCREASE THE AMOUNT THEY HAVE TO PAY PER MONTH!

Reminder that this issue could be trivially solved with absolutely no additional burdens on Discord servers by having the discord app compress the image on-device, before uploading it.

Rather than drastically improve their app’s usability for a large category of users at no significant cost, Discord opts to inconvenience them in the hopes of up-selling them on Nitro.

Slack has 1gb file size while Discord is being kinda lame not increasing file size.  Here is another idea Discord should partner up with a file like Letsupload and files would show correctly on Discord kinda like Twitter has 2 image host and when you post images they show correctly in tweets.

Instead of asking discord to increase the upload limit, discord could try to implement compression for the image if the image is larger than the intended file size. Or provide user difference setting between low, medium and high preset of the compression

I think i'll post my Problem here aswell...

With my Phone Huawei Mate P20 Pro and P30 Pro, im not able to Share Pictures over Discord, because in any angle i take a picture it is "too powerful" and i wanted to ask about automatic compression which would let me share my pictures directly over discord...
if you want uncompressed uploads you could either use a upload provider or upload directly a file over discord, they should stay same quality as they cannot further compress... lets say a .zip file

What are your Experiences on this, have you met this Upload Limit with normal Pictures too yet?

Pretty annoying you can take a Picture without any Option to lower Resolution, and then it tells you it won't upload it since they are too powerful. I can't really share a Picture without tremendous Efford - so a build in Compressor would be a cool thing.

Agreed, this is ridiculous that nearly any photo I take on my s10+ won't upload to share on discord, very frustrating!

it should be at least 32MB like Grabilla.

edit: even as a full Nitro member, 8MB for free users ar simply too low, despite you can do it infinitely. they really need a change this point.

or just release an update where peer to peer exchanges are allowed and that way there is no limit!

Nitro is a damn scam!  It costs more then a full service online backup per year!  Unlimited Backup $50 a year but they damn well want $9.99/month for Nitro just so you can upload larger files.. That is a damn RIPOFF scam!

File compression would be a very easy fix to allow images to send, especially as cameras advance. Any file you could imagine sending has a good chance of being over the file size limit unless it was compressed prior. 50MB is practically a standard to other services, but here we are with 8MB, 50MB being the "quality subscription". Why should you pay for something that is standard implementation? It feels like more of a scam the farther you go in. Compress the files, easy change for everyone. Compression formats are easily accessible and are near universal, so why has Discord lagged behind in this process? And why not toss in higher sizes in general to actually be with the rest of the world?

It's close to the year 2020, these upload limits need to be updated. A 50mb limit for a paying user is ridiculous. I've tried nitro for a month and I'm not renewing because of issues like these. Stop investing in shallow PR moves and marketing, please develop a better basic service.

That limit really needs to be increased by at least a few megabytes. If a simple screenshot from a iPhone XS can't be uploaded because it's too big then there's a problem. My friend group has been trying to find a replacement for Hangouts since it'll be shutting down this year and this is something some of them probably don't want to deal with.

My exact issue, I've had screen shots fail bc of the size limitations.... Something needs done and not going to pay when I don't use this app much yet.

Yep. Now in 2020, the file size limit is too low. Difficult to upload multiple pictures. It doesn't have to be super high but come on. It's 2020.

I understand that the file size cap is in part an incentive to get nitro, however, I would really appreciate the ability to upload photos I take (with my phone) without having to take them at that moment through discord or change the settings on my camera or get a third party app to compress them.

Just a small size increase would be sufficient for me to share simple, standard, phone-camera-quality photographs without constantly running into 'your files are too powerful!'

They could do what Skype does. Allow large files, and delete them after a certain period, thus preventing cloud storage cost.

  • Lottery248

another words, more phones are now capable of capturing photos at a resolution of not 12MP, 16MP, but more starts from 32MP, worsening the 8MB maximum limit for free users, uploading separately won't help as the time needed to upload it all.

they should overhaul the filesize, like free gets a maximum limit of at least 32MB, Classic gets 96MB, and Full gets 192MB, something like that.

there are no excuses on the hosting cost, as memory-side cost is more affordable over time rather than more expensive, and it's no longer as expensive as it was in like 2015.

Nitro is too damn expensive for the average person.  Seriously most of us are home users and to pay the ridiculous amount they want is just absurd.  If they lowered the price they would get a lot more payees instead of a select few.

To the people saying "just buy nitro", most of us aren't trying to send huge files 100mb or more. It'd just be nice to be able to record a phone video that's longer than 20 seconds without the upload limit being reached. Of course discord isn't a file hosting service, but 8 mb is laughable in 2020. I shouldn't have to go through a 15+ minute editing and cropping and compressing routine just to show my friends like, 50 seconds of something i'm recording on an iphone. ffs.

  • Kitteh6660

Yes please, I agree. 10MB is a more reasonable and clean number. I've seen many high-res art that is between 8MB and 10MB, and this would solve the issue of 'files too powerful'.

20 second clip? HAH Cute. I just tried to send a 5 second clip off an iPhone 6 and it said WOAHHHH NELLY! Them files is too strong pardner! -__- it's 2020 and I can't sent a 5 second video to a friend.  Nitro? Why, I send videos and pictures of infrequently a monthly fee for a 'maybe' is ridiculous.

discord has to make money, or at least not be losing money, your not entitled to have a larger file upload limit on a service that is already free
