Convert a group DM to a new guild/server
I would like to have a button or feature added that allows a group DM to be converted into a new guild/server, retaining chat history and participants, rather than having to start over.

I second that emotion!

Please do this, I'm actually begging Discord Staff!!

If you're asking for channels on group chat, it'd lose the purpose of group chat. Just make a server -19 -
i don't see the utility -15 -
Several people in the comments don't understand what OP (original poster) is saying. She's NOT asking to make channels in DM groups. She already has three DM groups that she made last year that are full of comments. She would love to MOVE them to a server so they would become channels in that server. I love this idea because it would preserve all the comments she has in those DM groups without having to make brand new channels in her server.

we understood

Suspense, the other user named undermaster did not understand. undermaster said, "If you're asking for channels on group chat, it'd lose the purpose of group chat. Just make a server" Irisla did NOT ask to make channels in a DM group. Simply making a server will not solve her problem because she wants to preserve the comments from her DM groups and move them to her server. That means undermaster's comment has nothing to do with Irisla's suggestion.

Would love this. We have a group chat that started small for our Minecraft server and we want to expand it majorly without losing our chat history and notes. Being able to convert a group chat to a server would be fantastic. I’m sad to see this have negative votes at the moment.

Yes please, this would be an incredibly useful feature as something informal and incidental grows into something bigger.
You want to preserve that history.

Definitely :)
Needed!

I agree. Slack has this function for a channel and it would be LOVELY for Discord, and useful, I feel.

This would be super useful I agree

This would be very helpful, please add.

Please do this.

Please implement this!

Please bring this feature to light, discord!! It would be incredibly useful to have the option to have a group chat turn into a server! As Lantizia said, super useful if something informal turns formal!

In a similar situation right now--would love this to become a feature!

Please make this a feature!
I'm in the same situation as many people above and OP. A group DM was created for a project, but it's starting to outgrow the functionality of a group DM. I'd like to retain the chat history since a lot of it is actually relevant and will remain relevant.11 -
Would love to have this feature.

PLEASE ADD THIS FEATURE! I'd like to use that for our group dm

3 years, discord... xd it would be very nice, I'm honestly very surprised it's not yet a thing.

I'm hopeful with this many people jumping onto the feature request that Discord will take it with more weight, the negative comments are far outweighed here.
The utility here has been stated and I'll restate it again as the OP. A Group DM gets started, participants may get added or removed over time, and that chat history may have important context and notes. This feature is focused for those chats that are long-running, not chats that get started and forgotten about soon later, and Group DMs are limited when the chat grows organically this way. Re-pasting messages from a Group DM into a new server destroys timestamps and other finer details, it takes ownership away from the user who made the message in Group DM so if they wanted to remove their message they wouldn't be able to and would have to ask the other user to, so put simply it creates issues. Slack already has this feature; a Group DM in Slack can be converted into a new private channel, and it retains the chat history and participants as expected. Discord is behind in features that exist for other similar platforms. The flexibility to do so could be an innovative way to share conversation, while keeping users in control of their messages, that is currently not available.
I look forward to the day this feature makes it into the Discord client. I have current long-running chats that would potentially benefit from such a feature if it were available.
Thanks for the support, everyone!

I would love it, we could make a sign thing to see if discord add that feature

I'd love to see this feature implemented

This would be extremely useful. It would be perfect if the Group DM chat history simply either A: became its own channel in addition to the automatically generated #general sub-channel, or B: _became_ the #general sub-channel in the first place.
Now I get acidic.
Obviously the ability to choose between the two would be "nice," but the Discord team seems to have enough issues holding the app together with duct tape and popsicle sticks as is without "further stressing them out." I'll see you all years from now when - if - it finally gets added. As a bonus thank you to us for suggesting it, they'll probably once again make the lag and bugs even more pronounced and widespread than what they actually managed to fix were.
End acidity; don't mind me. I'm just tired of #BigTech companies apparently using their user base as beta testers instead of even putting an iota of effort into testing things before release 😓0 -
