Please add Threads to Discord, that feature is very helpful for organize team discussions

2020 and this is still not a thing... we need threads and discord will completely destroy Slack. Having to screenshot prior posts and making a thread that way is time consuming and the amount of screenshots of previous posts is insane

How is this not a thing yet? This is the one feature preventing my team from ditching Slack.

I reached out to Discord support to ask about this and why they are keeping silent on it. This was their response:

Rest assured that silence doesn't mean that the team isn't reviewing the suggestions posted on the feedback page. The team still would like to keep some things as a surprise especially when they're not ready for release yet. Server folders, video chat, channel categories, and other key features in the app were once just feature requests, too. Even this year-old request about @mentions didn't get any official response until a few hours ago when the feature was actually launched: https://support.discordapp.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/360029602152.

I'm so sorry again that I don't have any official word about message threads, but I'd like to think that anything is possible in the future.

Whoa, jf! No need for an apology, that's still useful info to have. Thanks for reaching out to them directly.

Ha! That sorry was a part of their response to me. One thing I noticed going through the features that have been added are that they tend to sort requests by the requests with the most reviews at the top and then work their way down the list. As it stands right now, there are 10+ requests (in the chat category alone) that have more votes than this request. So we need to pump this request up a bit. Some of the requests ranked higher than this one I'm sure are less desirable, so I think just not enough people know this particular request exists.

    Oh duh, long work day.

Def agree that we've gotta boost this one up. Let's link it in all our servers, perhaps? 😂

This is absolutely crucial to make things easier to digest. Channels get so crowded because there aren't threads. This isn't just a nice feature to have, it's necessary.

I'm part of several communities that often have a relationship between at least two types of groups like staff and users. Threads would be immensely appreciated as a means of staff better being able to respond to other folks questions, not get bothered by other conversations happening at the same time and keeping it all in a searchable space that can be referred to later no matter who it involves.

Also, several of my slack workspaces would switch to discord servers if there were threads.

Threads would be a huge game changer for Discord. My team as well as I imagine many others would switch away from slack to discord if this feature was present.

Without threads big chat channels just get garbled up with people trying to respond to previous messages and multiple conversations happening at once.

I'm sure this is a feature that Discord themselves more than likely see themselves. If they do happen to use Slack for business integration then I understand.
If Discord does use Slack, I am sure they see this feature being useful.

Being in over 50 Discord communities, I jump around #channels and usually they are busy.

I'm going to use #support and #q-and-a channels as an example.

    • I see users answering questions especially when there are three or more people asking different questions.
    • The user that's answering the questions would have to @mention the person.
    • We either have to scroll up or sometimes guess which post the user that asked the question they asked.
    • A single user can ask more than one different questions.
    • Entire #channel looks messy, a back-and-forth conversation with many people talking at the same time.

It isn't hard to work-around this but it does use mental bandwidth which may not appear be a lot. But it does stack.

Its funny that I found this because I have fallen in love with Discord but the lack of threading is the only feature keeping me from using Discord for work instead of Slack.

The race is on for Discord to implement threaded conversations before Slack implements voice channels.

    Definitely need this!

Our development team could change Slack to Discord but we can't because we need threads. Please add this feature!!

I find this feature to be invaluable in Slack.   Please add this to the next release!

I am new (and might always stay that way) to Discord, and the cross-talk that busy people seem to enjoy is making my experience here, some sort of mental torture. I used to go into emergency mode to boost my concentration, ran out of juice for that, so basically now lost, I do punctual missions, drop a post, close tab, take a breath, resume other activity where "massively multiplayer" is not a god micromanaging all aspects of brain activity, even beyond games.  Then, when I remember the squeeze your nostrils activity that made me post, some two or three pages up, I do a search by my username to find my post back, and hope that some neighboring post is an answer.   Without threads, no thought or discussion can have more than a day memory retention.  It is like those movies about total whatever amnesia where the protagonist restart each new day without memory of previous one.  Twitter length inferno.  I guess, if the depth of exchanges does not require it, who care.  then lol.... etc...

So you may have gathered that this is not my choice being here.  Asking for counter-nature feature in that arena of 2 or 3 post long memory conversations.

Anybody knows if bots could be used to implement this (or is it a religious belief that no threading be allowed for those who want it, i.e. not in the API, or automation does not allow content analysis, or clustering).  I don't really want to go there, I don't know what's possible, I'd rather spend time in the threads, not feeling like in a death-match, while I try to think about post content.

some overlay threading structure (people could even use part of their posts as hooks for such bots to collate accordingly...).

Same here! This would be invaluable, I want to switch to discord for everything. This is the only think holding me back.

As a Discord nitro user, I have to say, thank you for the screen sharing feature! Haha, just kidding! I don't care about that feature. I want threads! When is that going to happen?

more noise! Let it be heard how much we would love this feature.

Make it disabled by default if there is worry that people are divided on it.

My group is considering a move to www.guilded.gg just for the thread functionality (though that product does have a bunch of nice features).

Our larger group of around ~60 with half being Nitro users is seriously looking into https://www.guilded.gg/ as an alternative due to their threads & other conversation management options.

search for threadstorm bot.  let me know if anybody has experience with that.  it needs admin permissions for servers you don't admin yourself , as far as I can understand, and I might be an eternal newbie.

Guilded is starting to look seriously good with those sweet sweet threads

@dboing I brought it to my server today but it doesn't work like threads on slack. AFAIK you cannot start a thread on private message. For me it looks like just starting new channels.

    Seconded!

    @Kamil Kik

noted about the private message not applicable, but what about non private.  did you try one or two fake threads with one or two fake, nested exchanges? if not, I or a friend might try.  if yes, is it straightforward permission wise, and do non-admin members of your channel can participate in the hierarchy splits (choose which post they reply to?), because that would not be chat channel behavior, even though it would be having same looking entry point.

as for the private problem, if the public behavior is satisfactory, I would guess that modifying that bot (assuming open source) would not be a great commitment (no real idea though just guessing).

    thanks for answering

This feature is absolutely necessary. Giant servers are a mess without it.

This is the only thing stopping me and my friends from moving over from Slack. It's definitely a dealbreaker for me. Threading makes everything less cluttered and more organized, not to mention it reduces notification overload for those not involved in the thread. This is a MUST and I hope Discord does it soon since I love almost everything about it :)

This is the only thing which prevent me to use Discord with more than 3 people at a time. Please add this, it would be awesome !
