Coming from slack I’m really surprised this feature doesn’t exist. I like everything else re: Discord - but threads seems so obvious.

Please ADD THREADS (AND POSSIBLY QUOTING) ASAP. Thanks x

Hey, we can all support together, currently, this is the most followed post, related to your idea.

Let's share and make it happen.

There is also a similar post under the name "Quoting" which has some following

By the way, I was also thinking that we should also be able to answer to images and videos, like when trying to discus about the content in the video. A time stamp sending to that video in that exact time would also be cool, specially in short time format, like this 00:00, 7:30 and so on.

Commenting for commenting is not a good move. Better just upvote if you need the feature but don't have any better proposition than what's already said in the main post. Keeping noise at minimal will both help them review the thread (feature details, etc.) and avoid spamming all those following the issue. Cheers!

Right now, this is the only feature that keeps our community (Barcelona Engineering) using Slack instead of Discord.

We need the  thread and at least a #$@^#$@ quote feature.

Would love to see threads as an option! It would really help keep multi-topic discussions orderly!

This would be a huge help for my team.  We are drowning in messages without having the ability to thread comments.  *scream emoji*

For those who are saying 'Use Slack or any chat site if you want threads and leave Discord alone!'

Let me tell you. In Slack and other chat sites there's a limited storage when posting comments, images, anything and to get free space (not to mention see previous comments) you need to PAY. You might say 'then pay the money, what's the problem?' is me asking you 'then would you keep paying monthly or why not you use Slack or any chat sites?'.

The other problem is if you're a big group/community that doesn't help either while maybe small groups/community might work in Slack or any chats, no hitting the limit. Because those other sites have a LIMITED capacity. LIMITED storage.

In Discord they don't ask you to pay (except Nitro and some online games), unlimited storage and images, great for chats, gamers, community group including big ones! BUT when you comment, yeah, you can just scroll and read it but do you want to keep scrolling to find the comment or if you make many different convo, questions, can you find in all that chatter no matter how much different channels you make?

Threading is helpful because 1. it's like a bubble where in group A can chat about subject A without getting interrupted by new comments and that would be same with group B C D, etc and 2. when a community has a channel for questions and answers it can be hard. Let's say A posted a question but B also posted a different question and so many others too then you have to tag the person and answer them but you also need to scroll up to know what question they asked and let's say the other half members commented random stuff. Very messy and confusing.

This could benefit any group, gamers, and while we have spoiler tag and quote block(?) we need threads because Discord is the only unlimited storage/capacity and no hectic and confusing comments even making different channels.

We NEED message threads on Discord.

Agreed. It would be nice to create a thread based off one post, so people can specifically discuss one post without cluttering up the chat and having all the comments for various posts scattered throughout the Discord channel.

Currently Slack has this feature and it would be great to see it in Discord as well.

I voted yes, Threads are very useful when channel has 15+ members.

I hope you'll do it for us <3

I like the idea of threads, but closer to how Mattermost does it, not Slack.  All messages are in the main message list, but you can pull out a conversation to see just those messages.

  • kuroe

Kramrm do you have a screenshot or text sample of how it differes from other threading styles?

It would help for people who may not use the ones you know.

@kuroe, Here are some samples I found online.  (Note - these are in the default light theme :)

Main message list is in the middle, with all message chronologically and an arrow indicator on how many messages are in the thread.  The list on the right are just the messages in that thread filtered out.  To reply in thread, you would click reply to access the conversation and then reply there.

Slack allows you to do either or, you can post directly to the main page when commenting, it just requires someone to click the button. I could see both having a benefit. Maybe allow the server admins to either force one style or the other, or leave it open for any option?

@kramrm To me it looks similar to slack but I like the idea too. :D

  • KramRM

The main difference to me is that on Slack, the sender has the option to post only in thread or in the main channel.  If only posted to the thread, I have not seen good notifications when messages are added to threads.  I would rather that "post to #channel" box be force selected on for everyone.

@kramrm To be honest I don't think anyone really cares that much about how they look, as long as they're there :D. I just don't get why they haven't implemented this yet. It's a nice feature for every type of community there (gaming / work / discussions / sharing...) and makes it become more of a sharing platform (which, by definition, is the purpose of a messaging app) than a post it board.

On the other hand, I do get that they need the monetization and should be putting all their devs into the store to get it up and running as fast as possible.

So let's just hope threads are next in line!

I have an additional request: To even do MORE than Slack and be really innovative, allow NESTED threading. As in: allow theading of comments in a thread!

  • drayzen

    Absolutely!
I've just started using Discord to subscribe to some information and was hunting the page to see where I could Quote/Reply to a specific comment only to find out it's not possible.
Ridiculous this was not built in from day one.

I see previous posts here raising this as a negative, stating that it would make posts harder to find, simple, make it optional...

Also consider how threads are handled in Disqus as an example, with multiple sorting options and compact connection lines.

Email clients are also a good reference with various simple threading options...

I think this would be an amazing addition to community discord servers where conversations happen amongst multiple people at once. PLEASE consider adding this as a feature. I think it'd add a ton of value!

Does discord team ever reads this?

We are releasing a new generation of sports manager games, starting this year. Our long-standing community is accustomed to traditional forums, and they will need this going forwards because user-created 'topics' of conversation make it easy to follow and stay up-to-date each day.

We would love to move our entire community to Discord. However as it stands, we'll need a Discord server as well as a traditional forum somewhere else. Not ideal. I don't care how you do it Discord. Re-imagine it, fine. But our users need the ability to create their own topics of conversation.

If your goal is to host game communities, I would like you to know that the current system doesn't cut it.

Another vote for this feature.  Strange this topic has the most comments but only a fraction of the votes needed to be at the top!

Remember to upvote the comments and the thread. That will help out as much as your comment.
