Overlay compatibility for macOS
-
Still not a thing? Get it together Discord smh

Hate to say it, but there never, ever will be a Mac version of the overlay, so best to give it up.

I think that this is really a petition enough. I would be happy to see Discord giving some more effort into upgrading mac users!

This is two years old, but I feel like since by votes alone this is the second-highest requested overlay-related feature at the time of this comment it deserves a bump and a suggestion.
There are two ways Discord could implement this, which I'll go into detail on, and a couple more they could investigate.
Three ways using MacOS APIs.
1. A transparent always on top window.
Now in MacOS, it is possible to create always - on top windows with transparency, that can do a number of things, such as following a user to different "spaces" (the term for virtual desktops and full-screen applications). This would be relatively simple to achieve, as transparency in these windows is native, and native APIs allow this without it being somewhat hacked together.
2. The hacked together way.
In MacOS Catalina, a new PiP API was introduced, you may be wondering, how does this help? Well, here's how. Discord, could simply use the PiP API to display a region of the screen overlayed with the call data - and use the screen recording permission to show the underlying application in the regions Discord's UI does not occupy.
3. The not an overlay but the same features way
Rather than using either of the slightly hacky ways of doing this, discord could just use WidgetKit and create a simple but effective rich widget in notification center. This would allow users to swipe on their touchpad to see call data from within other applications without switching to discord.
One way the community could do something with this.
1. Better touch tool.
BTT is a tool that allows users to script and create custom layouts that are persistent throughout the OS. Creating a script interface on discord would allow users to create a system-wide set of TouchBar icons to represent call data. This would allow the community to create a solution.18 -
Kenai, this is the most helpful thing I have seen in a long time! However, it does appear Discord doesn't give a rats a** about us macOS users. It's a wonder they even support a Mac client at this point, since we obviously don't matter.

Being brutally honest, Discord's shtick is Windows and Android. MacOS, iOS, and iPadOS has and will likely always be second class to the developers. Hence why we never got Discord games, the ability to even view what's in our library on iOS, etc.
Honestly, I fully expect this to get ignored like they ignored the issue with iOS a year ago when they removed speakerphone then added it back - except there's really nothing we can do because we can't rate a non-AppStore app.
I just wanted it to be visible that it's indeed possible for Discord to give us similar if not the same functionality, they're just choosing not to.5 -
Not to mention that it may not be that long before apple locks them completely out of iOS/macOS as well... do any of you think the day won't come when non-appstore apps aren't allowed at all (here's a good example, apple had a bug ups it's butt about nVidia, so they refused to sign drivers that had already been created to work with any OS from Mojave and up... we are talking ALREADY created drivers!)? Just about zero raid teams use anything other than Discord... so getting locked out means essentially quitting WoW itself. Using the in-game voice for raids is in so many way far better, it mutes game audio when your mic is keyed open AND it displays an overlay for EVERYONE. Problem is just about any of them require discord.
AND it goes way beyond just using voice... guilds, community groups and MANY add-on developers as well as things like class discussion groups ALL use discord as well.
Frankly, if I was running apple, i'd go so far as to lay a few bucks on discord to treat their users the same as the others. It would be less than change in the pillows of the couch in Cupertino.0 -
As a macOS user I think this is a long overdue feature. I can get a notification in the top left corner that people type a message into chat, but we can't get an overlay..? The functions to display that notification is the same one you could use for a permanent overlay.

I would like to add my voice as well it is a crying shame that there is no overlay especially with the pandemic and the rise fo games that need an overlay to help make the experience better.

+1 Please add overlays for MacOS users !
4 -
2 years and still no overlay for Mac? C'mon discord...
3 -
Omg, discord, please give us this feature, or just say if it’s impossible to implement! Just give us the answer!

this is pretty boosted there isn't a overlay for mac even though i don't use it. i have windows and some guildies of mine have mac's.

It's literally been 3 years since the original post. Discord, get it together. This post is solid proof that there is a market of mac gamers. I agree, we are a minority. But a feature such as overlay should not at all be too hard to implement. I'm not sure why this doesn't exist in the first place, all I know is that it doesn't. Honestly though, I know it's hard but you literally created a reply feature. I'm sure this wouldn't take you long.

Has this been missing for 3+ YEARS?!?!
Seriously how difficult could it possibly be?

I'd also like this feature...

Its been two years- The fact that MacOS users are still being strewn aside is awful. Our games run fine, and we should be given the compatibility to have our overlay.

DISCORD! COME ON! I am PAYING for nitro and you have listen to all of us Mac people that play GAMES JUST LIKE ON WINDOWS! Come on! AT LEAST TELL US IF YOU ARE NOT GOING TO DO It!!!
0 -
They don’t have to do anything, but we also don’t have to pay them for access to the service either. It’s not like nitro is a big boon to usability.

Some serious shame for Discord on this issue. Almost like having a ticket request for over 2 years and not doing anything about it. Can bet that they've had bigger things they've changed/added or bugs that have been dealt with than this user request.
For shame, Discord.

Windows users have had this feature for more than 3 years now. Mac users are still waiting and are not even being informed wether they are working on it or not even trying to implement it. I do understand that implementing features on macOS is harder than on Windows but I would at least expect a beta version after this long time of having disadvantage (even if it's only a smaller one). If Discord doesn't implement this maybe an even better application will be created that has features that Discord could have had for years. Discord is the most popular voice chat/chat software but if the mac users would switch to another application, their friends on Windows would go with them. That's just my opportunity.

Now this is the highest voted Overlay feature. And two years later and Discord is still ignoring us Mac users.

I managed to find out some of what is going on here. Discord's whole "overlay" system is NOT something they actually did. What they ARE doing is ignoring us and not at least explaining the situation. Which is that they license it from... are you ready, overwolf. The same outfit that bought Curse and turned it's WoW add-on manager into a commercial mess. OTOH it did spur several guys to write what is clearly FAR BETTER apps for that function. AND the 2 prime ones are written in cross platform fashion, so they run on win10 and macOS.
Just starting playing a game in win10 and discord is a whole different animal over there... all the stuff we have to tab out (or buy second monitors, get new GPUs to use 2 monitors) to see gets seen and has the potential for interaction right on top of the game. It's a whole different world. We are never going to see discord deliver a macOS overlay because overwolf has zero interest in it.
Why didn't we hear this from discord itself?

Brightbrown can you link the alternative apps for overlay?

I find it both amusing and frustrating that this was originally posted two years ago and there's still no Mac overlay lol
3 -
please give us overlay on MAC! its been three years since the original request :,/

Shame on you discord to ignoring Mac users playing on WOW ! 2 years since the previous post and nothing done . Shame Shame Shame (GOT Style !)
0 -
Well, 3 years later I guess we can assume Discord doesn't really care about Mac users. Screw Mac users even if they use it for WORK and not just gaming.
If after all this time this funcionality still doesnt exist, I know they don't give a f***... imagine paying for an app with the lack of dedication like this one.

Well, I just read the whole comment section and I'm confused if discord even reads feedback? I actually really want this but it seems like Discord just wants to ignore us. 😔
It's been 3 years now... how much longer does Discord need to finally add this feature. 🤦♂️ I'm sure they had enough time...0
