A notification option which normally acts like 'mentions only' but temporarily switches to 'all messages' if you are active in the channel or server.
Being notified for all messages is often overkill unless the server is not very active, but only being notified for mentions means you have to manually watch for new messages yourself if you want to actively participate in a conversation.
I suggest an option to be a middle-ground between 'all messages' and 'mentions only.' Just as a placeholder, I'll call this option 'active.'
See, if you join a conversation in a channel that is busy enough that 'all messages' is obnoxious (so you have it set to 'mentions only') but you need to switch to another window to do something else while waiting for the next message, your options are:
- Move/resize windows so you can see Discord and your other window at the same time (a bit annoying and sometimes not even possible, such as with fullscreen programs or when switching apps on mobile)
- Manually check Discord for new messages every few minutes (easy to miss a lot of messages you then need to catch up on)
- Manually check Discord for new messages every dozen or so seconds (wastes time and disrupts your other task, especially if conversation suddenly slows)
- Swap the channel to 'all messages' and then swap back to 'mentions only' when you're done.
'Active' would basically automate option 4.
So normally 'active' will only notify you of mentions, but if you send a message to the channel, you will then be considered active in that channel and will notified of all messages for the next... idk 1 - 30 minutes? OR if there haven't been any messages within that time period, you will always be notified of the next message (but none after that), regardless of how long it's been.

Optional tweaks may be worth considering:
Give 'active' a settings button on the right side which can include options such as how many minutes you are considered active, and whether adding reactions or even simply viewing the channel marks you as active (this would also be a convenient place for a short explanation of what 'active' does, if you think it necessary).
Rather than make it a whole separate notification option, make it a check box on the right side of "mentions only" which is labeled something like "notify of all messages while active"

Flexibility and fuzzy logic is always appreciated if it's optioned.

I would love to see this implemented. Such an elegant solution.

A perfect solution to a real issue. It's difficult to multitask and carry on a conversation in Discord without turning on notifications, and more options to automate something most people do manually is always appreciated.
I think the sweet spot for notifications is 10 minutes of notifying for every message (by default, there could be a slider for longer or shorter) or next message regardless of time. This should be able to be changed per server.
There should also be a text indicator below the text input field in a similar place to the slow mode timer, e.g. "Active for 10 more minutes"
