i have no notification when someone joins or leaves the channel

i recently installed discord and i get no notification when i, join a channel, leave a channel, someone else joins or someone else leaves. i do however get a notification when i disconnect the server and i hear everyone just fine. i was wondering if anyone else had this problem or is it one of those stupid fluke things?
