latest OS X update caused serious performance degradation

there's a pretty clear delay between my keystrokes and letters appearing in the chatbox, and doing things like clicking the emoji button takes a long time to load all the emoji. i don't know if this started right after the update, or after i clicked the GIF button and used that feature for the first time. anyway, it's seriously awful UX.
