Allow custom clients
I want to use my own completely self-written discord client, and I think it would be exciting to see how far client usability, client speed, etc., could be pushed if it became a more competitive, more collaborative area.
Discord doesn't have to make its own client's source public but I suspect lots of open source projects would spring up all pushing discord in good directions.
I suspect the current ToS may be banning this because it can be used to circumvent Nitro nags. Just write a new ToS that says "custom clients must do x, y, z,...." about how to advertise Nitro to users of the client.

Discord needs to not ban third party clients, full stop. If discord ever makes the ads more intrusive, those of us who loathe ads will need a way to be able to ad block, or we'll just leave.

The main pushback I get from folks on using Discord is that it is quite heavyweight compared to older technologies (e.g. IRC). If there were an officially-supported client that met their needs that would be great, but allowing third-party clients (even if subject to an approval process) seems like it would be less cost to Discord overall.
